i feel like its all goin wrong..
i feel like its all goin wrong..
Normally I'm on top of car problems but I have been a bit lazy recently. Last week I had the thrust bushes replaced which highlighted knackered lower balljoints. The front tyres need replacing, there is bad engine oil leak-I'm hoping is the vanos seals-which the fan is blowing all over the place.
Yesterday I got a "low oil pressure stop engine" warning which went away after a restart. My code reader is telling me 2 codes that camshaft position sensor bank 1 has no signal (which side of a V8 is bank 1) and now something is rattling inside the driver door..
I've also noticed that the radio sound-not cd music - is lacking loudness or bass intermittently.
Other than that it's ok. Anyone care to comment to cheer me up?

Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
It's a nice sunny day to be out in an X5? :smoke:
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
Well i did have both front windows open and sunroof open today. Radio off. Just listening to the V8. And the clunking suspension.
Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
Apparently it's going to be quite a nice weekend too.

Regarding the oil leak..
I bought 2 vanos gaskets from BMW yesterday so I can fix that. I was doing a bit of research last night and a common oil leak on the V8 is a small gasket behind the alternator bracket. It's a£3 part but has an 8 hr labour charge.. I hope it's not that. I have a UV dye to go in the oil so when I have cleaned the engine I'll put that in and have a good look around with the UV light.
If it is the alternator gasket then I think I may do it myself. Apparently it's removal of alternator, PAS pump and engine mount just to get at it. That means I would need an engine brace. Gulp.

Rocker cover gaskets are prone to leak on the V8, did mine on the 8 series, common on the M62 engine.

I did the vanos gaskets today. Right mess all down the front of the engine which I will clean later next week. The cam covers seem ok.
Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
Ive spent most of the day under the car. I had the engine under trays off and air intake pipes so I could give it a proper degrease/ wash. Ive put a uv dye in the oil so ill look later when its dark.
I also had a go at the lower ball joint.. That baby wont budge so garage it is. I also noticed a small blow from between the exhaust manifold and downpipe on the nearside bank- in fact its loose so i have sprayed wd40 on the nuts in preparation for an attempt to tighten it up tomorrow.

Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
If anyone has oil leak ideas help me out. It seems to be coming from above the alternator but not from the engine. The oil filter pipes are near it but it's not those. I just can't see from below or from top.
Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
Right. Here is the latest if anyone is interested. I think the oil leak is actually the valve cover gasket on the nearside bank. I just happened to see the front corner from underneath while I was repairing the exhaust joint. There is definatly a fresh oil drip on that edge and thats the higest point. The oil was leaking after I had washed the engine but before I ran it. Ill investigate further from the top tomorrow.
The exhaust manifold to downpipe nuts were totally rusted away apart from the stainless steel thread inserts. Bit fiddly to get off but no real trouble. Two new nuts and the joint is sorted.
Next was the coolant expansion tank. I was checking the water level and I noticed the floating pointer was at a strange angle. When I touched it, it snapped off and fell down into the tank.. I took the tank off and tried to flush it out but its stuck in there.
As for the lower ball joints- Its going in on Monday to have them replaced and front tracking done. My steering wheel has always been slightly to the left and if I straightend it when driving the car went to the right.
On a more positive note, I wash both the cars and I used some Simoniz 'back to black' on the plastic stuff on my car (mine is silver). What a difference. It all looks new black now instead of dark grey and tired. The black X5 doesnt look too bad anyway but ill do that one another day.

Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
Latest. I had it in the garage for 2 days. Both front hubs had to be removed to get the ball joints out. All the bolts sheared and had to be drilled etc. The track arms were seized to the track ends so that took a bit of effort.
He said he tracked it but when I drove it home the steering wheel was still at an angle.. I got a couple of spanners out and reached underneath, lengthened the passenger side track end 1 1/2 turns and shortned the drive side 1 1/2 turns. Fixed. Why cant garages do a simple thing like that?
I havnt had the invoice yet for the work so ill let you know how much it cost. The other X5 has a slight judder when braking so I recon the thrust bushes on that are on their way out as well..

Re: i feel like its all goin wrong..
Brake judder tends to relate to warped/uneven discs either replace or someone to skim them.
