F15 Tyre Valves

Post by GD » Thu Mar 17, 2016 9:00 pm

The valves on my car aren't long enough to get a forecourt garage air line on.
The new valves are silver and have a squarish unit at the wheel then the actual valve.  My valves dont look as long as the cars in the showroom.
The dealer said that forecourt air hoses are rubbish and theirs fit but as I pointed out, at 11 o clock at night when you need a garage BMW are shut.
My car is in tomorrow to see why the heated rear window never switches off, despite the computer saying no fault.  The dealer had said that if the valveis are an issue that has been reported, they will replace them, but an issue means more than me are having problems.  Anyone else had this issue?

The ones you describe on the showroom cars are the TPMS valves that have a sensor in the wheel. We have those on ours and have no issues with airlines.

It sounds like your vehicle isn't fitted with TPMS, but I've never known valve stems not being long enough to fit an airline to. New valves should be easy to source and fit.

Thanks, they are the TPMS valves, it's just that there isn't enough valve protruding to get the local forecourt garages to connect. Last year I put air in at a BP on thhe M6 but I've tried 4 locally none fit.

My old fashioned foot pump fits but I too lazy for that.

The dealer called and said the valves were all damaged so I challenged them and got the service manager.  The valves are all the new TPMS valves but there is only 4/5mm to put the garage air hose on. I have them on non BMW winter wheels so he suggested that the stem had been pushed into the sensor by my tyre fitter.
It's a sealed unit so he quickly agreed it wasn't that and he has never seen it before.

I had the valves on my standard wheel and they are going back on this week with new tyres and I'm not putting the short valves in.  The dealer offered a new set at £155 fitted, but I think that will be just be valves they will fit on the original sensors.  They are £9 each for genuine parts on eBay and £125 a set Including the sensor.

In fairness to the dealer, they agree the stems are too short, but as they are not on my BMW wheels, they could get out of replacing.  So, they are going to call BMW to investigate, if they won't change them and it's a new set including sensors for £155, I'll pay for them for the summer wheels get, 4 valves at £9 and get them replaced on the winters.
I've added a couple of photos below where you see the dust cap fits right to the flange and it's not tight on.ImageImage

Certainly look short, but maybe as they are non-BMW wheels you need a different version.

BMW GB can be very 'sniffy' about anything not theirs but the Dealer may be able to persuade them  :)

The valves are the valves it's the length of the threaded part to the flange that is just too short for some forecourt air hoses, it was the same when they were on the 20".

I wasn't making an issue and could have changed the wheels and then taken them in to get them under warranty but I need two sets moving forward.  It's more curiosity, what's the chances of 4 being milled too short and fitted to the same car so you would think someone else would have this problem or it's just crap air hoses where I live :)

It looks to me that your  non standard wheels have got thicker castings in the rim area, that's why the original valves don't poke through enough. :-[

I've had chance to check ours, and they don't look much different to yours! The thicker part of the valve may stick out from the rim a little, but nothing significant. So perhaps, as suggested, your aftermarket rims are a little thicker, and the valves are specifically for BMW rims.

Perhaps you could get some aftermarket valves for the winter wheels and stick these valves back in the BMW wheels. I assume the aftermarket valves are designed to fit any rim. Try the link below, they were very helpful when I rang for advice.

https://www.tpmswarehouse.co.uk/tpms-fi ... 0wod74wDCA

They informed me the F15 self learns new sensors, so no need to recode.
