Fire Extinguisher

Want to get a fire extinguisher as we're going camping in May, and thought if I'm going to do that, may as well get one to go in the X5, as this is what we'll always be going camping in.

can anyone recommend a good one that will have the capability to deal with a car fire, don't see any point in a small one as that would be next to useless.

Looks OK. 2kgs will give you 10-20 seconds at full blast.

When I worked with Surrey Police & Fire, their advice was get everyone away to a safe distance, call 999, and don't go near the car again!  Too many things that go 'Bang!' and can hurt you. 

I suspect we would all gave a go though, especially if the fire was still small enough, and it was our own P&J going up

It's more a better safe than sorry thing, if you've not got it out after 15 seconds then get away quick is the only safe option.

Has just brought back memories of many years ago though when a car extinguisher was used on a small fire in a wood burning stove that the attending fire brigade stated would have caused significant damage had it not been on hand.

Thinking as much for camping as the car, with 3 young children might be the difference  between getting them out of a burning tent.

The thing with fire extinguishers is having the correct one . Foam, powder, water, CO2. The last company I worked for, had us fit powder extingushers in our vans. As we carry oil, do electrical work etc, it's more suitable for these applications. ( very messy though )
Water and oil, electricity and water, a no no.
CO2 , good for most things, but ineffective in open spaces, can be a problem in confined spaces.
( havnt been on a course for a bit, but plenty of info on the net.)
I used to do work in She'll at Stanlow, so had to go on a fire fighting course, brill fun with the foam, putting out chemical/ petro chem fires .

I'm an outdoor ed instructor and have been unfortunate enough to witness 2 tent fires over the years. Both in smaller tents than you're probably using, but by the time you've grabbed an extinguisher it'll all be over if the fabric is alight!

Fortunately both incidents didn't result in injury, but both tents went up in seconds, the waterproofing they use make them a real fire hazard.
