Definitely a wierd one.  Sounds like it has been taken off in the past.  Good advice.  :)

Brings back memories of when I had to do an engine transplant in my first ever motor ( Mini Van ) when I fitted the new engine in I forgot to attach the earth strap from the body to the engine. When I cranked it over it melted the accelerator cable, as that was the only metal link between the body's negative earth and the starter.
Hopefully finding tours loose may cure all your woes.

As a general rule, the odder the symptoms are, the more I suspect a bad ground somewhere. I'm as old as dirt and have found bad grounds at the base of dozens of weird electrical gremlins.  Move to Arizona and Bob's your uncle, no more rusty connections.
