Glow Plugs Affecting DPF Filter

Post by David_martin@blueyonder » Sun Mar 13, 2016 7:51 pm

So I've just go my car (x5 3.0d 2010)back after a full service and four new tyres to be told I also have a glow plug not working. Only one which wasn't causing me any driving problems and was blissfully unaware. I said I'd just leave getting it fixed as it wasn't effecting the vehicle but am being advised to get the work done on the basis that if a glow plug is out it can affect the DPF regeneration and potentially damage the DPF. Anyone had any experience or knowledge of any issue with only one plug causing consequential damage?
Thanks

Hi David,

My 2007 30D regenerated fine with 1 glow plug fault showing, do you have access to a code reader, (carly BMW app), this will tell you how many miles ago the last regen was?

Cheers
Chris

I have a c110 code reader I've used on my wife's 320d a few times. Never had to try it on mine though. I'll look into whether it can check the regeneration or not. Thanks

From what I was told 50% of glow plugs need to be faulty to stop a DPF regen.
My X3 has one faulty plug and it regens properly.

Just had my glow plugs done (2008 3.0d) as I had 1 faulty (number 5).

I had the control unit / relay done at the same time as my Indy recommended it. He said often that if you replace the glow plugs and not the unit then the unit can start to throw up fault codes about 2 - 4 weeks later. Then you are repeating the same labour, etc.

I don't have a code reader or anything so can't say if the faulty one stopped a regen.

EGR needs to be working also for DPF to regenerate.

I had 4 out of my 6 glow plugs not working for a year and she still did a dpf regen.  My trusted indy garage told me to replace the glow plugs for a smoother running engine and better fuel economy.  No mention of dpf issues.  (2005 E60 530d)

Thanks for your responses , thinking I'm gonna leave it a while yet and see how it goes. I'll check the dpf regeneration with my a C110 if u can. Made my mind up though that if
I'm gonna do one I might as we do the lot plus the control unit giving the labour cost to get access.

Yes always replace all of them plus control unit as a lot of stuff has to come off to get to them

Glow Plugs Affecting DPF Filter

Post by centurion » Tue Mar 15, 2016 9:59 am

Beru is the OEM make on mine (535d E60) and i have looked at many other brands that do them too such as NGK, Bosch, Lucas etc. Has anyone got preference on which one to go for?

I recently got a quote as 2 of my plugs are dodgy. They advised that they (local Indy) replace all 6, run test and then do the ecu if needed after that as a lot of the labour is already done at this point.
