Clunking noise from back of car when I select gear ???
Clunking noise from back of car when I select gear ???
As the title reads..
As soon as I put it into drive or reverse it causes a loud clunk from the rear end. I haven't driven it more than a few yards back and forth. Any ideas ???
I have had diff oil changed and most other things done to the car apart from anything with the transfer box.
Thanks in advance

To be Honest it could be from a number of areas. When you put it in drive or reverse we normally have our foot on the brake to stop any creeping forward/ reverse. Normally the brakes stop any of the transmission from moving. If you have any play in the drive shafts or transverse box it will creep the bits I between until the brakes stop things moving any further.
Unless you get someone underneath to see what's moving around before the clunk it may be difficult to diognose where the noise is coming from
Is the noise there under normal driving?

I didn't dare drive it more than a few yards forward and then back to where it was to avoid any greater damage .
I will give it a go on the weekend but a friend said if it drives normally then it could be a diff mount or bush ?

Re: Clunking noise from back of car when I select gear ???
Thanks for that I cant see anything underneath and am not mechanically savvy so not much good.
My mrs drove the car last and had returned from a journey and as she was pulling into the street she said it felt like the car was dragging as if the handbrake had locked on and it was struggling to move forward.
I thereafter confirmed the clunking noise when selecting gear and moved the car a few yards in reverse and then drove it back into the parking spot as it was making noises from the rear. I have spoken to a mechanic and asked him to tow it away and repair it.

It requires a full lift. Can't be towed.
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Just in case......
I did actually see someone being towed on a 20ft strap on the M25 about 6 weeks ago! It looked very unsafe.

Sounds like desperate measures, recovery services are thankfully reasonable up here in the North

Got a diff from;
One Birmingham Motor Works Ltd
Unit 4 The Business Centre, James Road Tyseley, Birmingham, B11 2BA
Mick 07751299288
Cost 870 and the diff was removed from a car showing 80,000 miles. I was told that they would remove the diff and strip it to make sure it was okay prior to sending it out,
Fitted to car and working as good as new oh and they gave me a 3 month warranty on the diff
