2014 F15 // Rusting Break Caliper's & Rear Drums
Hi Guys,
I'm a new X5 F15 owner and new to the forum.
I'm over the moon with my new purchase (2014 Carbon Black F15 XDrive25d M Sport) and will post some pictures soon once I get my plate on the car.
One thing I've noticed straight away is how the brake calipers and rear drums are rusting.
Any thoughts on a quick fix? - or should I invest in getting them painted/sprayed?
Thanks in advance.

Yip that's the case had new ones fitted about 6 weeks ago and they are already starting to go I usually give them a coat of cold galvanising spray when I do a deep clean keeps them looking ok for a bit longer than the original

Great - thank you.
I will give them a good clean up and perhaps paint them silver or black using some Caliper paint to stop it happening again.
I'll post some pictures once its done.
Cheers.

I think this a 'standard feature' on BMs! My 07 E90 did it, my 11 R56 MINI did it, and our 15 F15 is doing it! Pretty poor for a premium car brand. I fitted coated Brembo disks to the MINI, which has solved the issue.

Rear drums?
Coated discs?
I'm confused as to what is going on here.
Do you mean the discs are rusting? There are no drum brakes on BMW's?
All discs show rust - the pads will skim it off as soon as you brake. It looks worse when you've just washed the car.
Coated the discs with what? any coating would hinder/stop braking and, if you don't die, would be gone due to pad friction anyway?

Re: 2014 F15 // Rusting Break Caliper's & Rear Drums
The disc centres are only sprayed with aluminium in a very thin layer and given how thick the iron on the disc assembly is light surface rust is nothing to worry about. 'Premium' brand doesn't mean they have to coat everything, especially when it's merely cosmetic. Every car I have owned - whether premium or not - shows surface rust on the brake hubs/disc assemblies as they are made of iron, not stainless steel. Brake dust is very corrosive as is the crud on the roads. Each to their own though.
AFAIK the rear assemblies have very small drums in the centre for the parking brake.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Apologies if this caused any confusion - when I originally said 'Rear Drums', I meant the disc centres.
I ended up having these and the brake calipers treated and sprayed (calipers in black and centres in silver). I couldn't stand having the rusty colouring on the wheels on a £55k car thats 12 months old!

Mine were the same too and it is disappointing. Sytner Maidenhead have just painted my disc centres under warranty.
