New gear change behaviour when cold

Post by Jontyp » Mon Feb 22, 2016 8:27 pm

Well, not sure if this is new or not but I've noticed just recently that when I set off from cold on my journey home the car seems to upshift with no discernible change in engine revs. I'd describe it as though the car wants to stay at 2000rpm with each gear change not really dropping the revs much at-all. Then, when everything is warmed up a bit you get what sounds like a much more expected drop in revs with each up-shift. Hard to describe really. Acceleration seems normal. I'm just not sure if this is new or if I'm only just noticing it for the first time.

Any thoughts or questions?

The car has a 'cold' running program until the engine & transmission temps hit a certain point, then it changes.

I noticed last week that my X6 would not choose 8th below 50mph until it had been running for about 15 minutes whilst everything warmed up.  After that it was completely normal.

Mine holds it in gear longer before changing when cold, especially notice when pulling off from a stand still for the first 5 mins at least and gear change is not as smooth.

Thanks folks. I did wonder if it was summat like that. I've probably only recently spotted it because my commute routes have just changed and tends to show the behaviour more obviously than before.
