Oil Filter Removal

Post by kennyfin73 » Mon Feb 22, 2016 2:11 pm

Struggling to get the filter housing cap off. Thinking it would be easy I dropped the oil first then went for the filter, doh! Anyways, have topped up with fresh oil. Whats the script now if I manage to remove the cover, ie is it gonna make a mess with oil? Am thinking quite a lot will drain back down anyway.

If its the E53 Diesel, the filter will be empty.

Get the filter cartridge cover off 1st, as you may drain the oil for nothing, if you cannot remove it... and no point in refilling with new oil & a dirty filter...

Suggest you get an old towel to cover most of the area around the filter... I keep the new filter box handy with a Sainsbury's bag in it to pop the old dirty filter into it under the bonnet area - keeps the floor cleaner.

The filter top cover is undone with the bloody great hex - located Between the engine & the Webasto unit.

There are special BIG sockets to release it, but a giant Adjustable spanner will do the job - just ensure you don't chew the hex up...

There a re a bunch of "O" rings to change on a stalk that normally come with the new filter cartridge, and the filter just drops off the stalk and new one pops back on easily too, after you changed the "O" rings.

When you do it back up & tighten... understand that it is JUST PLASTIC... so only needs nipping up, not a tonnage of torque.

The top cover only needs to seal the "O" ring around the edge, so the pump can SUCK up the oil thru the filter, there is no high pressures involved at this location.

Hope this helps.

36mm socket, or have a look on your favourite shopping site for a tool that fits over the flukes rather than the hex.

It sometimes needs a steady force just to start it going - fine thread - and then it's easy.  Definitely keep a towel handy because the filter cartridge is not enclosed and will drip!

Chuck a new one over the spindle in the cap, change the 'O' ring (should in most kits) and wind it back and give it gentle nip over hand tight - but no more than that.  I only use a 6" T bar to keep it low force.
