Thinking of getting an x6 2012 ?

Post by Luke1471 » Mon Feb 15, 2016 10:26 pm

Hi guys new to this forum..

As the title says I'm after an x6 and I'm just wondering what are they like? Many problems? Also what are they like on fuel? It's a 30d I'm looking at. If not an x6 then a range haha

Why specifically a 2012 model? Is it because you're looking for best value for money? If so 2011 would probably be slightly better.

Check out the X4, better than a Range  ;)

I have a 2011 X6 40d (same engine, twin turbos) and it's been good so far.  Vastly better than my 2005 X5 was.

Around town you should get just under 30mpg and on a motorway run just over.  Mine gives 27 and 32 at 29K miles.

The X6 is big - or looks it - even though it's just a fastback X5.  It does have road 'presence'.  Clever rear axle with torque distribution is standard.  Self-levelling air susp is an option - I chose not to have it as the 'sport' suspension is fine from the factory.  Handling is very good for a 2-tonne beast.

There have been a couple of recalls you need to check have been done properly.  Front driveshaft failure - there is/was an issue which causes them to fail catastrophically.  Security updates - two of to improve the anti theft system and make it harder to clone the keys.

Check the VOSA website for any others.

20" wheels fitted with Dunlop RFT have a poor tyrelife - I got 15k out of mine at best.  Now fitted with Bridgestone.

if you were hoping for more than 30 mpg id buy something else lol, i would think to get 30mpg you would need to be pretty frugal with it, i used to be able to get my 35d down to late teens early 20s no problem

It's not that the X6 itself chews tyres, it's the E70 X5 as well.  The Dunlops just seem to be poor.  The Bridgestones I now have fitted are faring much better, as are the Pirelli Scorpion winter tyres.  Dunlop just seem to use too soft a compound.

On a decent run to Wales from here - approx 300 miles - 3 on board plus children's support kits (more clothes than I thought were possible etc) at motorway speeds and a roof box on I get 33mpg.  My daily commute is mainly good roads and 28 miles turns in 31.  The 40d is better on economy than the 35d it replaced.  The single turbo 30d should be a little better.  You won't see much more without some form of remap though.
