just had a look behind the cover on my BMW 2006 x5.
Is it the fitting for a tow bar?

Looks like the towing eye point.  Tow bar assembly uses a special bracket and the standard mount is a Westphalia swan neck vertical socket.

I'm afraid not, as X5Sport said that's just the towing eye socket, here's a pic of what you would see through that opening of the bumper if u had a towbar (note the big bulge and elec socket). This is the bar I've just bought for mine... Looking forward to collecting and getting cleaned up, painted and fitted
