BMW started to fit the vortex type breather to the E53 in late 2005. The part number for pre o5 will be the bog roll old type that block up. 2005 onward part number will be the vortex type.
Mine was a 55 plate and had the vortex one fitted.
I would remove the engine cover and check, it may have been already changed.
Once the new type is fitted it s good forever, it can't block up.

You just got a luv useless dealers, and worse parts guys!  I think owners on here know more about what we drive than all the BMW Dealers combined!  Perhaps we ought to set up a national chain....... :P

Should I stick with a genuine one at around 60 quid or an aftermarket one for around 30 quid

Dealer one.....and it shouldn't be that expensive.  I think I paid about £40 OEM.

Part 12 on this diagram look right?  Realoem is a copy of the BMW parts database.  Often a newer version that Dealers have!
