Just before Christmas, someone hit my wife's X5 while it was parked.
It was in the bodyshop last week but I was checking it this morning, first time I've seen it in daylight, and left hand side isn't sitting right. I went back to the bodyshop and although the locator tab near the headlight is positively locating in the appropriate hole in the wing it's just not sitting right. It almost looks like it's too long.
The paintshop suggested that the bumper could have distorted as it was baked off the car.
I'm starting to think the bumper could be a non-genuine part.
Does such a thing exist?
How could I confirm this?

I would contact the insurance company and tell them your not happy with the repair. If the body shop is a recomended repairer for them they may put pressure on them yo put it right .

There is a small amount of adjustment when fitting body trim / bumpers... and lets face it, they will have NAILED the car back together as fast as possible with very little consideration to the body fit and alignment...
As our honourable colleague mentioned, get back to the insurance and get a complaint in writing & on the fone...
Makes you wonder how many bolts n screws were left over !

It's taken me a while to discover the cause of a rattle under the front of our 3-series. It had the entire front bumper stolen (yes really) and I have now found rotgut the Bodyshop didn't have all the fittings so they put the engine underbody shield back incorrectly.
It is missing the front three fixings and was placed above rather than below the correct point to 'hold it loosely in place' >:(
It was an insurer 'approved' bodger 40 miles away in Essex rather than the BMW body shop 6 miles away!

Sorry a bit off topic, but my wife bought a BMW Approved 3 series E46 when it was 3 years old, it came with a years dealer warranty, 28k on the clock, very tidy car .
After 6 months she said it had developed a rattle on the near side when driving on bad surfaces.
I said get it back into The dealers, they had it for a couple of days, had it on the ramp, test drove it over several rough roads and couldn't find the rattle.
Still she could hear this annoying rattle. I got fed up with the moaning so I took the car for a spin down a cobbled red. ( yes we still have a few left ooooop Norf.)
Once I removed the travel sweets that were in a metal box from the glove box, the complaints ceased
