Thermostat renewal on X3 2.0 diesel

Post by mikesmith2939 » Sun Feb 07, 2016 5:25 pm

How easy is it to change the main thermostat on my 2007 X3 2.0 Diesel?

Any tips for this doing this?

The way I did mine was:

Remove engine cover
Remove coolant cap
Remove EGR heating unit - There are 2 deep bolts attaching this to the exhaust/engine
Remove turbo pipe, there is a rubber sleeve (that makes this a PITA to refit) - I put a rubber glove over the turbo inlet as when you remove the pipes from the thermostat you have a chance of getting water in there
I then released the 4 bolts on the thermostat (careful not to drop them as you don't get new ones with a thermostat)
Then released the 2 pipes on the thermostat
Then reverse.

Top up coolant and then bleed system
On my 2.0d I only lost around 1.5l but on the 3.0sd I lost 3.4l.

The way I bled mine was remove the vent screw on the EGR thermostat, top coolant up till fluid comes out and refit screw (gently as its plastic) fill coolant to max cold. Start engine with max heat inside and only 1 on the blowers.
Leave running for around 5 minutes.
Take it for a test drive (I went 20miles) and once cool top up if necessary.

It isn't difficult but be careful and take your time

Now have an issue, tried to change main thermostat today.

Got everything unbolted but could not get the egr cooler out, whilst trying the two cooler to manifold bolts dropped out and fell into the engine bay.

However these bolts are not of a metal that sticks to magnets, unable to see or feel them I am now stuck without a car due to this.

BMW do not stock the bolts so I have had to order two new ones.

Its funny you should post this up as i did mine on sunday and i also dropped one of the egr bolts into the engine bay then spent over an hour trying to find it with no joy so i put a stainless hex head bolt same length and thread as the original with plenty of copper grease on and finished off the job.
car seems more responsive now and the temp gets up to 90 degrees where as before it would never get over 75 :)

But why are the bolts non magnetic ?

Will get the new bolts in tomorrow then it goes into a local indy for them to do.

Only charging £100 and no hassle for me.

If stainless steel some alloys are non-magnetic - a pain if you drop them
