Av yearly spend - non standard maintenance......

Post by utred » Mon Feb 01, 2016 11:42 pm

Just picked up a rather nice 2007, E70 which I'm rather pleased with.

Up until now, it has always had a Bmw fsh & been covered by warranty by the previous owner - I was intending to continue with this, until I started thinking I'd be paying £110 Pcm for the warranty, plus £250 excess if needed, plus more expensive costs from main dealer servicing (slight assumption).........

It all adds up and now I'm not sure wether it's worth it?
If you look on the net, it sounds like all x5's go wrong a lot, but I'm pretty sure it's as per all reviews and your more likely to add content, etc if you've had an issue or problem, so this massively skews reality......

What I'm interested in is, how much are people spending on fixing their x5 (specifically e70's) if they haven't got a warranty, on a yearly or ownership basis.

I've had my e70 for 18 months now and it hasn't cost me a penny except for a replacement tyre, i took the gamble and didn't extend the warranty.

I bought my first E70 last month but have been a proud owner of E53 4.8 for last 6.5 yrs :)

E53 was under BMW insured warranty when I bought it in August 2009 and I kept it that way since, at a warranty cost of about £1k a year (I'm selling it now but warranty is still running just in case I need it).

During my 6.5 yrs of ownership major items that went wrong AND covered the under the warranty were Pan Roof frame/cartridge and CD/Radio module which in total I think were below £2k. Other items mostly not covered under warranty due to being wear 'n tear items. Looking at my example, it doesn't make any financial sense to have the warranty but for a piece of mind it was worth it.

For my E70, I'm thinking of putting aside £80 pcm (about the amount I'm currently paying for E53 warranty) and use that pot for all repairs, wear and tear, etc.

Generally, in my experience, if a car is well looked after, set properly and not abused then parts will last well beyond their expected life but for a bad/average example anything could fail at any time. So it's more important to know how good example a car is before deciding whether a cover would make a financial sense or not :)

Cheers for the replies guys - it kind of looks like what I'm thinking!
- I know the history of the car and what has/hasn't been done and how it's been looked after.
- put away £100 PM and I should be there or there abouts. fingers crossed it doesn't come back to bite me in the proverbial!

An alternative plan might be to buy a warranty from someone such as Warranty Direct.  It is a lot cheaper than BMW.

You do need to be aware that they will not pay for investigation/diagnosis but they will cover the actual repair.

In my case I had an auto gearbox failure.  I paid BMW £75 for diagnosis and a £50 excess.  WD paid out £3,700 for a rebuilt box and control unit.

BMW refused cover, but quoted £7k to replace the box - they do not offer a repair/rebuild option.

Just another possible route for you to consider taking.  My policy was £400 a year.

hmmm, that does sound like a reasonable compromise - I'm a little wary of 3rd party insurance, as all you seem to hear is how poor they are at paying-up/trying anything to get out of paying.
