Mine had a recall done the other day for a security software update. 
Since that though first thing in a morning my key won't reset my seat position

Had updates put into mine several times.  Dealer only job. They need doing fairly regularly as modifications are made to different systems over time.  The recent biggies have been to try to close a couple of serious holes in the security systems.

do dealers upgrade it as part of the service or its an extra service ;)

In my case it's part of the service, and it should be included.

I also had a recall on my 2008 e70 for the security update.  They needed to keep the car overnight

Just had security update on my 2013 and new wheels under warranty
Car plugged in for 6 hours
