Electric cars

Just seen a report on Sky news about electric cars and thought how are the forum members getting on with there's.

Probably not what petrol heads want to hear but I'm loving the concept.  Everyone who has an electric vehicle that I've spoken to has also embraced the future and can't see themselves going back.  With the next generation around the corner and range expected to be a realistic and more useable 150-250 miles per charge this can only encourage more to give it a go.

Ok I'm in a Nissan Leaf, so not the most dynamic vehicle to drive but the instant response and relaxed driving style work well.  The wife has a F10 520d that doesn't get used at the weekends or holidays as she prefers driving the Leaf.  I also find the auto gearbox on the 520d frustrating as it seems slow to respond compared to the Leaf.

So would I consider another electric vehicle, oh yes, I'm already looking.  Would I consider another large 4x4 such as the X, yes.  Once they have an electric drivetrain.

this is one reason i bought a guzzler and a petrol at that

last few years to enjoy petrol engines  , after that it will be electric hybrid at the minimum..

a decade later maybe cars will drive themselves, then it wouldn't matter whether they run on petrol or hydrogen or nuclear!

One of my colleagues has a Leaf and travels on motorways a good deal.  He finds the range to be less than stated (not surprised as there are hills around the area) and that motorway charging points are frequently u/s, vandalised or occupied which has left him in a pickle a few times.

He likes the car itself, but the supporting infrastructure remains an issue.

Would he buy another?  At present the answer is 'not without better range'.

If I was commuting less distance than I currently do then I might consider it, but I don't have the budget for a commute only car and that eliminates anything electric for now.

This is the problem with a limited infurstrctor and relative successful uptake with the cars.  With the next generation not that far away then the need to rely on public charging should reduce as more will be able to get to there final destination on a single charge.
