3.0D or 3.0SD

Post by TomX5 » Thu Jan 21, 2016 10:35 am

Hi All,

Hopefully a quick question; I just insured my car, the insurance company recognised my registration as being a X5 3.0D M Sport where as my V5C refers to it as an X5 3.0D M Sport.

Is there much difference between the 3.0D and 3.0SD? How do I tell what I have?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

SD had twin turbos.  D is single.  Your message has the V5C and insurer types as the same?  Did you mean that?

DSA don't always classify the separate trim versions on their database.

Cheers X5Sport,

Apologies, the insurance has it down as a 3.0SD where as the V5C has a 3.0D.

Type in the VIN here and this will tell you what it is.........http://www.bmwvin.com

Important from an insurance point of view I would have thought as the SD has 286 hp and the D, depending on its' age will have 235?

My X6 also says 3.0D but it is a 40D.....same sized engine, extra hairdryer and more oomph!  I did send the V5C back when it first arrived and they just sent it back!  DSA must work off engine size was my only thought.

Odd isn't it. I suppose as long as the insurers know which one it is they have less wriggle room in the event of a claim.

Doesn't the V5 state the CO2 emissions, I think 3.0d is 214 and SD is 216 g/ km
Don't take my word for it though, check the figures are correct first

Thanks for the replies.

It was the insurance company that held the incorrect details. They were reluctant to alter the information but I insisted once I'd read about the differences. The fact it brought my premium down too was a bonus.

The car had a private plate a few years ago, I'm wondering if the vehicle details were entered incorrectly when the plates were changed.

I have a 3.0d and when I bought it in November 2008 there was a query about the car tax because it was registered in April 2008 and X5 3.0d then required about £250 for tax.  In a telephone call to DVLA I was told they get details direct from the BMW importers to register the car with them it was down as made in August 2007 and CO2 at 231g/km - higher tax bracket.  They agreed to change the details if a mistake had been made. No such luck though as when I telephoned BMW - they confirmed the VIN and details at the DVLA were correct.  In short, the V5 should be correct and an insurance company should act upon its details.

When I got my X5 in 2005 the MIB database didn't even have the correct engine or bhp listed.  The changes brought in at facelift just had not been picked up at all and all the insurers I checked had the same error.  That was more than a year after the variant had been on the market!

It took several phone calls and suggestions as to where they needed to look, plus me emailed the technical spec as a scan from a brochure before anything was done!

All the databases are only as good as their administration!  Hence the oft used term CiCo - pronounced phsycho - for Cr@p in, Cr@p out!

Glad it's sorted and for once in your favour  :)
