How to jump start e70?

Post by celica » Wed Jan 20, 2016 7:55 am

Car has had a low battery and with the cold it won't start

It's at home and I can get to the battery and have access to a mains

Is there something I can buy from a car parts shop to help trickle charge, jump start it

Need to get it started and aim to her a new battery

Alternatively can they be jump started with another car battery with jump leads?

Any jumps leads and may it harm other car, as I have a smaller car at home which is fine

Yes to both.

Halfords sell jump start devices that run off the mains, or it might be cheaper to buy a charger and leave it over night.

I've a F15 and it has a dedicated terminal for jump starting from another vehicle, the E70 might have similar. I'd get a decent set of heavy duty leads, I've seen cheap ones melt! Once connected, leave the jumping car running a while before trying to start yours, and make sure you rev the jumping car whilst trying to start.

Getting a new battery today hopefully and fitted by a BMW specialist so it will be all coded up

Didn't appreciate how much jump leads are for the thicker ones

Decided against starting it against my small honda so a mate
Popped round in his e46 m3 and did the job

Left it running 10 mins
Gave it a 15 min run

Hopefully it will start this afternoon to get the new battery

-6 degrees and having had increased battery discharge flash at me for over a a month was probably why!

Glad it's sorted.

Decent kit always costs! Just remember, buy cheap, buy twice.

Battery is 900a

Jump leads for something like that is £60+ at the motor shop near by

Spoke to the guy in shop and he said lots of it is sales pitch to buy bigger grade
Went for 400a I think so half decent cable thickness in fairness which was fine

Definitely recommend the CTEK chargers.  It's what BMW rebadge - and then add a surcharge for the privilege!
