I'd check the exhaust manifold isnt leaking first..
Common fault on the 3.0d, but not sure if its the same on the petrol??

Then all connections / pipes etc around the exhaust system
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

I suspect a leaking cam cover gasket......dripping slightly onto the hot exhaust manifold

I had the same issue, it was exhaust manifold ( a very common issue with these cars).

Does your exhaust blow at al, if not, if you sit in one place with the car running, do you smell a gas smell?

If you do need to replace the exhaust manifold, you can pick up a cast iron one on ebay for £70 and get someone to fit it for you (I got someone to do it for £230). So £300 all in.

If you go oem route, some guy was planning on charging me £1k all in. MASSSive difference since I replaced it and NO smell at all

I have a manifold leak... still awaiting a place yo do thw job on my X5 where I can start the job & not get frozen or drenched doing the job... i got a loud turbo whistle & my X5 smells awfull...
Oh to have a decent workshop again....

Hoping I get a performance & economy increase when the turbo is spinning properly again one day...
I got all the parts, just gotta find some where to do the job...
