n62 engine in a 53 plate........correct or not?

Post by the shreksta » Sun Jan 17, 2016 12:44 pm

Hey guys

I'm going to look at a x5 on a 53 plate with 125k on the clock and the seller is telling me that it's an n62 lump, I thought they were only in 2004 onwards. It's kinda put me off as I know the n62 is prone to issues. I've asked for a pic of the bay so will put pic up later

Cheers

Look up the production on Realoem and it will confirm the engine used in EU.  It's the build date that matters as the registration can be months after the car was built.  I had mine built in December and registered in March the following year - at a reg plate boundary.

Hi, it's Deffo an n62 as he has sent pics.

This is the car in question, the guys seems honest enough and he has answered all my questions without fail in full but the n62 has the lever issue and the transfer pipe issue so I'm a little put off

Contemplating this one aswell, it's not the n62, it's 700 quid cheaper and 40 miles closer

I would make sure you view them first as when I bought the wifes last year with a £4500 budget I couldnt find a decent one. I went all over the place and viewed 13 before upping the budget to over 5k.
These cars are cheap for a reason- damaged trim, juddery transmission, self levelling issues etc. I even saw one on a dealers forecourt and the door mirrors were hanging by the wires and side indicators were missing!
I got (sort of ) lucky with mine. 2.5k cause the seller knew it had a trans fault. It scanned clear and drove ok when I looked at it but started to play up a few days later... Quick fluid change sorted it luckily.
Just some advice through experience..

Thx for info mate, I would probably be better with a 3.0 petrol for my budget but I'm scared they will be too underpowered

+1. Yes, 3.0 petrol will be too underpowered, under stress and much worse fuel economy.

from experience here too....

DIESEL  - unless you are going the 4.8 route for power...
the 3.0 petrol will roll, but torque is .... well... iffy at best... :'( :'( :'(
AND the diesel will deliver 550 miles a tank.

I'd also not worry too much about electrical issues, as they are generally more annoying than expensive.
I've had just about every electrical gremlin there is on my D-Sport... but at least I know the vehicle thoroughly now.... and there is soooo much you can do as Prevention of issues too.

There are many vehicles out there with a huge list of electrical issues, and for the most part the modules & fixes are relatively simple with the help of this forum... and not actually expensive for the most part.

So even if you got a vehicle with a hopeless damaged transmission, there are places that will swap the gearbox out for a recon unit for £900... and you could get an other wise lovely NICE vehicle for £3,000 or less with a knackered box.. just because the owner has been quoted £5,000 by BMW

Hey guys I've decided to go and view the silver one, is there any tricks of the trade regarding testing the gearbox etc? He assures me it doesn't lurch and changes up/down smoothly.  Anything else I need to pay particular attention to?

I've told the guy I want to view the car from cold and that I want a good half hour or so test drive with motorway/town driving and he says that's fine.
