2005 4.8iS Doesn't like going to sleep. Funny issues with CD/NAV DVD (RESOLVED)

Post by 4.8iS » Sun Jan 10, 2016 10:42 pm

As per title...

After 6 happy months of ownership and 6k miles the Beast has decided to prove that I should have perhaps bought a Cayenne GTS ;)

Last Thursday my wife was stranded at the Station car park with a flat battery completely out of the blue.  As a side note, on the Sunday we had just come back from 10 days in France where we covered 1350 miles sans trouble, including a 600 miles dash back. Jump started the car, went home, stuck a CTEK to the jump terminals and thought nothing more of it. The next morning, she disconnected the charger, drove the kids to school and herself to the station and yes, that evening she called me again to tell me the car was dead. The GT3 came out of the garage, I jump started the bus and she came back home.

Then I realised I needed to do more work. I think it is not the blower resistor. The car simply does not want to fall asleep within its allocated time - sort of like my 2 and 5 yrs old. But joking aside, here are my thoughts:

I suspected the NAV DVD - its light is on 30mins after the car has been locked. And I can also see the screen almost flicker into life only for it to go back to completely off. I pulled the fuse. Car went to sleep but it took absolute ages. Like 2hrs.

Secondly, while driving today and listening to the CD Changer, every 2 or 3 mins or so, it would disappear. Completely. Not to be found even as an option - suddenly I had tape and radio, no CD Changer showing at all. Then if I wait and press the Mode button again, it would come back on, only to disappear soonish. Took the radio module out - dry as a bone and no signs of water ever been there, but who knows?

Third, when I open any door or tailgate, all lights inside come on, except rear left passenger. The bulb is good, as the light can be switched on manually. Could it be a problem with the GM3/LCM?

Where am I now - 1h 45min, DVD Nav fuse out, radio module out, alarm on, no lights or anything on, yet LED next to gear lever still winking at me with its orange eye. Yet, earlier on we went out for a family meal, spent 2hrs in the Restaurant and when I came out, the LED was off, in other words, the beast was sleeping.

Any ideas or a specialist in SE London/Kent who can help?

Many thanks in advance,

Alex

P.S. He is a 2005 4.8iS with 77k on the clock, BMW Professional Sound System....

Hi...
All this sounds very familier with my 3.0D Sport 2 days ago...
vehicle would not sleep.... sat nav unit flickering away for ages.

eventually I disconnected the Blower Hedgehog connector & hey presto...
no power loss & vehicle slept properly...

this hedgehog FSR seems to upset lots of stable systems...
Read my post below -  Power Drain -GOD HATES ME ...
may shed a little light & assist you.

I put a replacement battery on any ways, and the hedge hog too...
and won a spare Hedgehog today off Flea-bay for £10 to keep as a spare, as they are a regular failure it seems.

my original Hedgehog unit appeared to work perfectly... but was still dumping power.

Thanks a lot. That does sound encouraging. Will disconnect tomorrow and see how I get on.

Anyone have an idea about the CD having a "moment" disappearing off the menu? That was happening during driving!

Quick update. Went to the car this morning - the gearbox light was still on - clearly the cheeky one had not been to sleep at all. I had the CTEK plugged in, so I don't think any damage was done to the battery. Clearly I am dealing with an intermittent fault as last night at one point the car was asleep. Will definitely pull the FSR tonight when I get back from work and update you again.

I've taken my 4.8 to BMSport (bmsport.com) in Bexleyheath for routine mechanical servicing a couple of times. They have a done a good job, but not cheap. Cant comment on their knowlegde of the electricary though.

For mechanical servicing - I will do it myself, unless it requires engine/gearbox out as I don't have a lift. I look after two race cars :)

I have had very mixed experience with BM Sport through a previous car - a brand new Z4M Coupe. They ruined the fill plugs on both the diff and gearbox, as well as did not do the valves clearances when asked during an interim Inspection II (car was tracked heavily). Yet, they diagnosed correctly a failed MAF on a friend's 840i Sport, which Stephen James Blackheath could not work out. ETA Motorsport has been recommended. I will unplug the FSR tonight and will report how I get on.

Thanks for the suggestion though...

You deserve a medal and knighthood. Unplugged the FSR and she fell asleep like a baby within 17 mins. New Behr unit ordered off eBay.

Many thanks one more time and well done the forum! I am glad I am part of it.

You're most welcome, glad we all helped.

its amazing how much knowledge is here...
and
how little there is at a main dealer service garage...
Even more amazing is how MUCH the main agent will charge you to solve SO little, SO often...
and how MANY unnecessary parts you will pay for in the process...
