Here's the spec:
A7 3.0 TFSI
- 0-62 5.2sec
- BHP 296
- Lb/ft 324
- Mpg 34.4
- Co2 190

Torque is less than the E53 even with the 3.0L TDI plus it had lots of turbo lag.

A7 3.0 TDi
- 0-62 7.2sec
- BHP 204
- Lb/ft 332
- Mpg 48.7
- Co2 152

But the petrol just takes off and keeps pulling on and on! Which I didn't quite expect with a lower torque.

Not bad, but as you found petrol engines just go on when diesels run out of revs.
