Hi, in the past month a slight vibration throught the steering has developed at low speed on full steering lock. On a visit to the garage to check this out the technician thought it may be the front transfer gearbox needs replacement, but also that the front tyres were worn (rears changed about 1000 miles ago) which, due to differing circumferences may have stressed the front transfer gearbox.
After renewing the front tyres the vibration has reduced but not disappeared altogeather.
I have a BMW extended warrenty on the car, which is an 2011 X6 3.0d with 35000 miles, which Ive had for almost two years now.
Has anyone else had any similar problems with the front transfer gearbox? The garage technician implied that this was a known issue with the X6.
Thanks

Front vibration of full steering lock
Re: Front vibration of full steering lock
Uneven tyre wear, incorrect tyre matching can cause noisy diffs and have wrecked several diffs too.
There was a recall / service inspection on E70/71 front drive shaft in 2013. See attached link

It was MY 2010 cars though. Worth phoning dealer with VIN number to check, several posts on the internet re 2011 X6's with Broken front driveshafts.

Had 2011 40d x5 last week for transfer box exchange. Bad vibration at low speed etc. Remove fuse no92 and check how it drives. Let us know.

Re: Front vibration of full steering lock
Tyres causing it? As in wrong tyres triggered the damage?

Re: Front vibration of full steering lock
Tyres were BMW spec. All star marked. Did transfer exchange, car was fine. Its a 2nd generation of the xdrive system on face lift e70, e71 so still new for me. Did not have time yet to open the old one to see what was the problem...
Re: Front vibration of full steering lock
Hmm, one to watch for then. Only got 27k miles on mine but.........
