E83 Rear Wiper Issues

Post by hibbs » Tue Dec 01, 2015 12:54 pm

I need a little help with the rear wiper on our E83.  The wiper and washer have both stopped working.  I have checked the fuses, and all appear to be OK, so its either the switch, wiring or the motor. I have a strong suspicion that it is the motor as the wife admitted to it not working when she switched in on when it was frosty morning.  ::)

Anyway, before I go out and spend £100+ on a replacement motor, I did want to check that my assumptions are correct.  Has anyone had similar issues and would a faulty wiper motor prevent the washer from working?  I have stripped down the back door and got to the wiring, but to be honest I cant work out which of the three wires are which in order to test them properly with a multimeter.

All suggestions welcome!

Looks like the rear wiper has two fuses, you said you had checked the fuseS, weren't sure if you had checked one fuse per item. IE Washers and Wiper.

I've not had this problem with mine but you should see 12v going to the motor with the rear wiper switch on.

Put the negative lead of the multimeter to a ground point (make sure it's a ground point mind) and probe one of the three wires.  If you see 12v at any one of the three wires, switch the rear wiper switch off and see if the 12v disappears.

If you are getting 12v to the rear wiper motor, it might be the motor.  First thing to do is gently rotate the wiper arm without bending it so it turns the motor ever so slightly.  This might move the motor on a bit and help it go.

Thanks for that. Job for tomorrow. I have managed to source a new motor for it off eBay so going to put it all together (when it arrives) and hope for the best!

Quick update. New motor hasn't arrived yet, but the wife took the car to be washed and it started working again (including the wash function). I'm going to see how it goes before doing any more work on it - the motor may soon been on eBay!
