That sounds like an alternator / battery issue rather than head unit issue..
You may just be addressing the symptoms and not the cause.....

Cold weather doesnt help..

Mine has been OK all year but now i am having major issues and have ended up with no charging current at all...
Wont start, wont run and when it does as soon as you brake the dash lights up like a christmas tree

Just awaiting a new regulator pack to turn up and I'll be ripping the rear off the alternator to hopefully fix it..
At the mo it looks like I can replace the regulator & brushes with the alternator still in situ..
Need to put that theory into practice.
Must remember to take piccies etc and post up a 'how to avoid' post

Get the starter current draw tested.  Must be no more than 185A.  If it is then it might be killing the battery badly and it does not get a chance to fully recharge.  Known issue.  Battery will test as fine.  You need at least a 1,000A range current clamp.  My E46 showed 540A and my E53 900A.  Both were originally diagnosed as battery but then the battery tests found the batteries were fine.

BMW dealers are poor at picking this fault up.

It won't charge battery so will only run for as long as your battery voltage can last..
When I tried getting it home the other day it smoked like heck, spluttered, all warning lights come up, radio went off, and then engine died..

Strangely enough I didn't get Trans Fail Safe message!!??

Not trying it again until I can get to swapping the regulator out.

I'm in the middle of changing my headunit over, my nav screen kept on resetting and doing annoying things.  That and I find the navigation pretty poor even after map updates meant I decided to upgrade.

I already had a Pioneer X3500 Dab from my previous car so didn't have to buy much other than the wiring / mounting kit.  I'm currently making up a mount to fill the bigger than double din void and mount the headunit and I'll be up and running.

It's been made easier by the fact that mine didn't have DSP!

The test fit with plugging all wiring into the correct places in the boot produced huge improvements in sound even without my amp so looking forward to a decent sounding system with iPod, bluetooth streaming, rear camera etc!

Next up will be the fitting of a sub but that might have to wait until after christmas!

Hi Colin

I have replaced the standard BMW (alpine) sat nav head unit (well actually it just the screen and controller as the BMW sat nav was in the back) with a Kenwood DNX9260 BT head unit.

Thi new one which has the garmin sat nav, Bluetooth phone which connects as soon as you get in, with it plays DVDs, tuner, and can has the options to add a sub and rear view camera if wanted. The unit gives a lot better sound more clarity and depth even with me. Retaining the standard BMW speakers without. The BMW dsp.

The biggest headache was getting a fitting kit for the unit which I found on line but wasn't cheap, but it worked well and was straight forward to assemble.

Overall would I go back to the old BMW head unit, definite no not unless I sell the car. I am looking to add an amp and sub in due course and poss the camera
