130k service time ! facelift D

Post by chelsea » Sun Oct 25, 2015 9:16 am

well, I have owned her for a whole year now,and covered approx 14,000 miles now with little in the way of problems.
I have had to replace the rear discs and pads(£114) ,the o/s rear light cluster (£45 ebay), and a now sorted niggle with the suspension(solved with great advice from a guy here, thanks!) ....I would say that up to now it's been a solid reliable bargain and have found over this time that it is one of the only cars I have owned that does exactly as it says on the tin, great car and when its time I will be having another :-)

So, I'm now on 130,000 miles and the service light has come on this morning, she has a full coopers, york, service history which unfortunately I can neither afford or am willing to keep up, I'm good to go on the spanners and am capable of most jobs so am going to continue servicing her myself.

Can anyone advise of anything else apart from the oil and air/oil filters that I can renew whilst I'm doing the normal stuff??
cheers,
Paul.

Fuel filter, air con cabin filters are probably worth it at the same time.

If more than two years since last done then brake fluid should be changed.

After that it is the usual visual checks of everything underneath, suspension bushes, CVJ boots condition, brake lines - especially the runs at the rear of the sills, wheels, tyres, brake function & condition, pad wear, hoses, coolant level, clear the scuttle of leaves/debris, lubricate the bonnet catch locks, door locks, boot locks, sunroof drains (if fitted), battery area for water etc.

Should keep you busy for an hour or two... :)

....lol....yep a few hours there ;-)

...Fuel filter? is that the one that sits on the driverside sill? I will do the one under the bonnet anyhow along with the rest of normal stuff.
Mine being a facelift, will the breather be the new type one or should I check?
cheers.

Under the sill.

You could have a vortex depending upon when built.  My Dec 2004 build E53 was the earlier foam bog roll.

It's actually located underneath the passenger side and not the drivers side, there's abit of covering to remove before you can replace it.

As X5Sport said check battery compartment for water, seems to be a very common problem with older X5's, water gets in and ends up blowing various components, this is how my suspension module blew

If your changing the air filter, you may aswell change the breather filter! Its a filter that always gets missed! But should be changed as it helps the life of your turbo!  8)

cheers chaps,

Will go get all the stuff friday on way home from work. I am sorting my rear suspension out at the moment and have already stripped the boot area out, no signs of anything untoward in there,in fact it all looks like new, battery venting and no water etc  :)

Will do Andy, I did an interim service shortly after I brought it a year ago but just did the oil and filter as the air filter looked ok and there were still 3 lights left on the dash indicator, this time Im going to do the diesel filter , pollen filter too....I may even attempt the brake fluid after??? :))
