Any sugestions to damp passenger footwell??

Post by Roy2593 » Fri Jan 14, 2011 1:51 pm

Hi all,

I was hoovering the front passenger footwell yesterday and noticed that the cars carpet and under the mat was damp, but the mat was dry on top! The damp patch is only on the flat surface o he carpet and not on the sloping bulk head of the carpet. Drivers side is dry as a bone.
I replaced my windscreen at the end of Noember, and not sure if thats leeking? I have spken to the windscreen company and the chap there was trying to confuse me with big words, but basialy trying to say that the screen was ok, they are sending someone round Monday to look at it.

Has anyone else had the same or similar problem? Or have any ideas what it could be?

My car is a 2005 3.0d sport with no sunroof.

Many thanks,
Roy.

Hi Roy,
incontinent passenger ?

Sorry couldnt resist that, on a serious note mine did just the same thing on the drivers side SHORTLY AFTER A WINDSCREEN CHANGE, sounding familar here, and it was somehow incorrectly fitted although they said not but strange how it never leaked again !

Mine the water was running down the back of the bulkhead as yours is by the sound of it, best you look inside with a torch to make sure your fuses etc are not swimming !

Hope you get it sorted,

Paul

Some are behind and around the glovebox, lots of wires there so not where you want a flood.

Yes mine was replaced, 5 weeks later leaked like yours, then replaced again more carefully and hurrah its fine. I think they trapped a screen seal somewhere causing the ingress. When mine was fitted a second time i waited 24 hours then went through a car wash then searched for wet bits.

Cheers

The screen is glued in, so it's possible that if someone either did not put enough glue on or incorrectly aligned it wiping glue off, or the doors/windows were opened a shut within 6 hours of the glass being installed which means the glass 'blows off' as the glue has not set. Both my front screens were done by BMW who kept the ar in the workshop with the windows down for that time to stop seal failure. BMW changed the screens under the original warranty as they refused to honour parts of the car warranty if someone else did it, and also because the first change was originally done by well known 3rd party repairer who fitted the wrong version and messed up the attempted re-install. They also told me to leave the car for just two hours before driving it which isn't enough.

If it isn't the screen have a look at the electronics module under the cover of the pollen filter on the passenger side in the engine bay. If the lid isn't fitted properly it could have water in it which will leak through.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Many thanks for your replies.

I have searched the internet and it seems that the vapour shield behind the door panel is somtimes the cause of damp footwells. It comes apart from the door and allows water to seep into the car.

Has anyone had this problem before?

Thanks,
Roy

I've just noticed water seeping down from the bottom of the door panel. When i pull on the panel it runs down, when the door is shut it runs into the footwell!

A job for monday i think, its promising better weather!!

Roy.
