The 2.7 engines in the RRS  suffered oil pump casing issues ; check its been done.

Suspension rubbers can go frequently as does the lower ball joints at the front.

Some engines have suffered blown turbo-chargers which is a body-off repair - is bits get in the engine can be a £10k bill.

Older cars have also experience corroded rear cross-over brake pipes.

I'd only buy with a warranty.

I would also opt for the E70, my cousin has RRS and he's spent just over £2K in the second year of ownership.  Luckily the first year was covered under warranty!

Looks like you have an RRS itch you need to scratch there. I think everyone here has given you feedback, but I thought I would add in my two pennies worth if that is okay.

My ex business partner had a 2.7 Disco, then a 2.7 RRS and then the 5.0 Supercharger. He had a huge brand preference for Land Rover/Range Rover products which seemed to defy common sense (I can talk as I run an Alfa Romeo as well as an X5....). He swapped the Disco for the RRS as the suspension/ride made his wife car sick. He kept the RRS 2.7 for 2 years where he had nothing but trouble. The suspension failed twice, the second time leaving the car off the road for 5 weeks due to a parts shortage. The suspension issue is well documented and as the system is shared with the disco (in fact the RRS is a re-bodied Disco) and caused so many issues that back in 2007, that Land Rover could not cope with number of failures. Suffice to say the second time the issue was resolved. However, multiple electrical gremlins and a troublesome gearbox meant he lost his patience and swapped it for the 5.0 V8 Supercharged one - which again had a suspension failure and needed a replacement gearbox as well as electrical gremlins (including the most temperamental of sat navs) . Once the lease was up he went to an other RRS V8 Tdi which again has spent a lot of time in the garage though not for suspension problems, but for a 2 turbo failures and perished catalytic converters....

He leant me the 5.0 to me for a 2 week jaunt to the South of France so I got to know the car fairly well. Initially I thought the car was very nice, drove with verve and made a lovely noise. The interior was a pleasant place to be, though the secondary switch gear felt brittle and flimsy and not of a car in it's price range. The rear room was good, though due to the relatively short wheel base the leg room was only average and the wheel arches intruded into the space. However the boot space was good and compared well with the C350 Cdi Estate I had at the time. The ride quality is (from what I remember) better than my X5, but it did not handle as well. I would trade in a a bit of handling for better ride comfort for my X5 I must say. Though not comparable to the Tdis, the V8 was shockingly thirsty, only achieving 21 MPG on the motorway and once I reached the riviera it would barely get over 17 mpg. I drove sensibly and rarely pushed the thing so it was a bug bare. The other  issue was the gearbox, which was slow and lumpy in delivery. The Sat Nav was my biggest infuriation at the time. It kept rebooting and at one point just plain refused to switch on (including the infotainment system), it was dim witted and had poor graphics (though I understand this was greatly improved on later cars). It was a nice place to be the it worked, but would I own one? No... Too troublesome, it is a nice car that (in my view admittedly) was poorly resolved. Parts are expensive and the suspension problems would put me right off...

The 2.7tdi engine is (according to my ex business partner) to weak for the weight of the car and not that economical, though he seems delighted with the V8 Tdi.... He loves the badge so it is obviously something that means he is prepared to put up with the above....

Yes well thats the RRS off the list i cant see why so many people buy them if they are that bad and expensive to fix.

Looks like its the x5 for me then,but saying that they is a lovelly 2007 Porsche cayenne 3.6 on auto trader but from what i read online the mpg is terrible on them.

I think people buy either a RRS or an X5 or a Porsche because they like them and it fits their needs. The cost is probably not the overriding factor because logically if you are trying to save money why buy a 2 ton plus car and expect it to return good fuel consumption or as they cost 50k plus be as cheap as a Vauxhall corsa to repair.

I know I bought mine a 54 plate 4.4 because I wanted the look style comfort and performance of a V8 driving position etc but as the car is a weekend car about 100 miles at most and does only 2-3 k miles a year the the fuel consumption of 18-19 in town was not a major issue, a diesel is slightly better on fuel but still not great round town either and both are better on a run.

But for all the negatives and costs involved I wouldn't not have one and I also still like the RRS for its looks and presence i think because it to me it has character if such a thing exist in a car, (I think on top gear they did a test and they all chose an Alfa Romeo even though it was the worst car to buy and was unreliable). Yes they are cheap to buy in comparison to their original price , but not necessarily cheap to maintain, however saying that try an Audi TT those rings can be zeros on the price of some parts, and when the cars go wrong either you are capable and fix it yourself or it's a trip to a garage and pay the bill, which can be more than a mondeo, but I'd still rather have the X5 than a newer mondeo. I view it as a car that I enjoy and can afford to maintain it, and I have spent less on it than when I had a modified Vauxhall Astra.

Remember most forums do have posts about problems as people need assistance and a lot less of not how great the car is or reliability and there are thousands of all these car made and if they were all that bad they wouldn't have sold any in the first place.

Whatever car you choose pick the one you want and it will make you smile, otherwise if you go for what other people tell you and you always say I wish, just to have a rainy day fund for any car.

I'm also deliberating this at the moment and have been put off by reliability worries on both.  Also been thinking about the Q7 / Touareg but keep coming back to the X5.  To me it's the best looking, is available with all the right toys and has such road presence.  Despite looking I still can't find a decent buyers guide though...

@wad187 - have you driven either yet?  Would be interested to hear how you get on.  My budget is about the same too!
