Hi Guys my current car is a 2007 bmw 530d msport lci its up for sale or i may just part ex.
Im finding it very hard to choose between a e70 x5 3.0d and a rang rover sport tdv6 2.7.
i know the bmw is faster,more reliable,more economical,and the interior and sat nav are better BUT i just love the look of the RRS and think it has a better image.
i know im going to get biased opinions on a x5 forum but has anyone had a RRS and x5 and are they really that unreliable.

Rrs are horrendously problematic. Two in work with me had one ( one had a disco 3 ) which is basically a sport with different body.
Over 2 years he paid out £9000 in maintenance. Sold up and now owns a 530d tourer e60 [emoji1].
They do look lovely, but I would think very wisely on the RRS unless of course its a year old etc and in warranty.
As you have said nav on e70 is better, but only on 09 onwards cars which have the hard drive based nav, the dvd version is by todays standards really poor.
The 2.7 engine for such a heavy car makes them in my eyes underpowered, drove both cars.
Get a well spec'd e70, these cara are by no means totally reliable I should say. I had a few issues with mine. But did love it!!

I think I would stick with the Bmw my brother has run a Range Rover sport for years and still does but never keeps them very long
Wouldn't like to think what the repairs would have cost if they where not in warranty
Same issues with my first D4 lots of niggles think the D4 was a nicer drive the sport was a bit stiff and when I had one while mine was in for repair towing the caravan was not the same and didn't feel totally planted compared both to my X5 now and the old D 4

Chatting last year to my pal, land rover trained, now working as a motor engineer for himself in an a rural area where there are stacks of land rovers and discos, I commented that I'd heard horror stories about disco/RR sport reliability. His reply "They're all true!!!" He certainly keeps busy...

To me today, the RRS and the X5 are in a different class. The RRS is a level above. The RR two levels above! The Range Rover badge carries a level of credibility, heritage and brand snobbery that the X5 cannot match. Not helped by the fact that I feel most modern day BMW's are fugly and rather dull aesthetically! IMHO! )
I would take a RRS over an X5 today for sure - with one MASSIVE caveat - It would have to have the balance of the OEM warranty!

Prob worth driving both to see which you like driving or want and fit your needs, as most RRS are better spec'd than the E70 like heated rear seats and they have a small sunroof and side steps. Both can have issues and may be worth considering a good warranty for at least the first year on either car as fixes can be costly via dealers.
There is a good guide on the E70 ownership it's definitely worth reading, there may be the same on RRS websites than may help
My brother in law had a 2.7 RRS from new a nice car and comfortable but a wafty ride on air suspension where as the E53/70 drives more like a car and I like the drive on my current E53 over his old RRS. He had probs with the gearbox and air suspension and he had to pay for the suspension to be repaired which wasn't great and was about £800. Then he had a RRS 3.6 diesel and also same ride but no issues. I think the RRS look good and stand out and for me I would go for the style of a HST or later Autobiography models and prices are pretty reasonable now as the newer model is out.
Have a look at Saxton4x4 website as they have lots of both RRS and E70 with different spec'd and colours etc
Since then he got a new RRS and that drives like the E70 but even better and returning 35 mpgdownside is its a lot more money definitely a different animal to the older model being aluminium and out of my price bracket , but his is on a Pcp, another friend has just got a 2016 RRS and he is over the moon with it his has a fixed glass non opening roof which lightens the interior and again on a Pcp.
For me depending on budget say up to 30k I would go E70 but I know a few members on here have also had both and changed from RRS or RR. For the E70 pano roofs again can be a prob although are desireable and the rear air suspension can cause probs as it did on the E53.
But if you have the RRS itch then as they say you may have to scratch it and get one, The worst situation is you have one for a while and dislike it and then change again, but whichever you go for make sure about a warranty as some of the cars are 2006/07 on and like any car of that age it can have issues. As I had an extra warranty on a 58 plate 1 series and it saved a £500 bill for the fuel pump after 8 weeks of ownership, thank goodness.
Good hunting and there are a lot of both cars out there just take your time and get the one you want

Thanks for the reply guys its a hard choice indeed my budget is only about 13k up to 15k for the right car so most iv been looking at are private so no warranty or if they are in a garage its only 3 months warranty.
One thing i did notice when i drove my friends x5 was the steering was very heavy, in my e60 i can turn corners with just one hand this was not possible in the x5,are they all like that, maybe the wife will struggle.

yes steering heavier than the average. That kind of money I know where I would be regarding where money was going. I feel you would be buying into trouble at that budget on a RRS and would be looking at cars that are no doubt due a lot of expenditure very soon. the dash etc on rrs also feels a bit plasticky, remapped a few in my day and was never overly impressed with build quality of earlier ones.

+1. I've always liked the look of the RRS but the cost and regularity with which they suffer mechanical issues stops me from going any further.

Ive never had any problems with the X5 over the years & just ordered another new one.
RR was constantly in the garage. Mate just bought new one and already in the garage.
X5 IMHO is also better looking...

The X seems well specced and one owner is a good sign as someone buying this new normally has the means to keep servicing done on time or when required The add states 7 seats and the finishes of with 5. This could just be down to sloppy cut and past when doing the add. Look to get £1000 of the price.
