Battery 2008 E70 3.0d

Post by E53Steve » Thu Oct 15, 2015 11:01 pm

Ok, Battery discharge or something similar displayed on idrive this morning, car started but noticed a bit slower turning over, late finishing work so only place open was Halfords for another battery so bought one from there with view to fitting when I came home but thought i'd better to a search to make sure it is straight forward, but after searching here and other sites it looks like it need coded/paired to car, although the BMtroubleu on youtube doesn't mention this and chap at Halfords didn't mention this (although doesn't surprise me) so standard BMW battery still fitted but on the way out 12v 90Ah 900A, bought the Yuasa 12V 100Ah 900A thinking a little more power which should benefit, does this have to be recoded? I presume so as it is not like for like. Anybody done this and not coded and had problems? I know it has been mentioned before but just needed some advice, i would suspect the battery has been changed on a few of the E70 X5 now and not all by BMW or people with relevant software.
your help much appreciated

Yes you need to 'pair' the battery so the systems know it's a new one, what 'type' it is (as in AGM, Calcium, Wet) and it's rating (Ah).  Bosch Silver batteries are a better bet.

If you don't paint it then the charging system will continue to think you have the original battery and either under or overcharge it.

I'm not surprised about Halfrauds......they can only just about handle the tech in a Mk1 Astra, and even then it's only if they can read a Haynes manual (which will require all of them to be able to handle long words).  An E70 is a whole library of knowledge beyond that!

Thanks for the info, was starting to wonder if it was for Start/stop cars as I presume they would have quite a strong battery due to having to start the car every 5min

The E70/71 draw up to 60A off the battery with the engine off!

Does a new battery have to be paired by a dealer or indy or is it something that you can do yourself?

I think you need software to do it so an Indy with the right kit.....or even a member on here.....should be able to do it.

It only takes a few mins to do.  I haven't tried the Carly App, but owners of that may have found the option.....

Well changed battery myself and all OK once car got moving again after the normal 4x4 failure etc all due to battery being disconnected, no big deal, I went in to my local Bmw dealer and explained to them, they told me that the battery needs to be registered to the car, which is now done. Don't know whatbenefit that does but done now

It resets the intelligent charging system so it knows about a new battery and changes the charging cycle to match.
