Wheel change

Just put a set of wheels I bought early this year on to the car so gone from 20 inch staggered to 18 inch same what a difference so quiet and compliant

Going to run them until next spring I think

I presume this is for Winter Tyres? Did you make sure the rolling radius was the same?

The wheels where off the f15 SE so no issues there although not winter tyres  thought it would save the wheels from the winter weather and make the tyres last until next summer

Hi not sure if they are the correct offset as usually the M sport has a lower offset on the rear et18-21 , Se is et45-53 . I would ask a main dealer as it could effect the cars stability .

Yes they are the wrong offset but know different to the se they are all still f15 same axle etc I understand the handling will be affected

I had to change my rear tyres last week at 22k, my fronts are fine and am holding off for my replacement wheels.  There was still 2mm on the rear and I had wanted to wait until next month when I was going to get winter wheels and tyres.  I am a tight git and don't fancy giving BMW £2500 for winter wheels (I have the 20 inch) but saw on mrwinterwheels does a set of 18inch alloys with tyres from £807. The cheapest tyres, not RF are well rated in Canada and those with a puncture kit will suffice.

As I say, I am tight but also quite clueless when it comes to wheels and a friend has to get a new diff (I'm sure that's what he said) on his Mitsubishi thing when he put the wrong wheels on.  Will the 18inch with winter tyres be fine if not what am I looking for?

Bear in mind some insurers treat changing wheels as a modification, they don't often charge more, but will want to know if you've fitted winter rubber

Winter rubber no longer an issue for the majority of companies.  There was a 'concern' 5 years or so ago, but not these days.  I don't even need to tell mine.

Agreed Peter but as indicated  the issue was a bit of a stumbling block a few years ago with a few companies. Maybe worth being mindful of &/or checking with insurer as best to know before a claim rather than after one is rejected following an assessor being thorough.

Winter rims are one thing but different specs and offsets could be an issue.

I changed my wheels on my Golf from 17''s to 18" and AXA charged me extra, as it was classed as a modification.
I've just  ditched the Runflats on my 3 series, and my insurance is due next week for renewal, Swiftcover is coming out the cheapest on a comparison site, so I will find out if they are bothered about it before I pull the trigger.

I don't ever recall being asked what wheels (size or model) were on any of my BMW's so for me, having an alternative set of OEM Wheels is not something I'm going to waste 20 minutes on the phone to my insurers for. It would be different if they were Aftermarket.

^^^^ Tis your decision Turks but the small print says its your responsibility to let them know if there is any change to the car's spec. Some companies are even looking to load premiums when 'factory' options are dealer fit !!

Since the cost of repairs keep rising they will look harder and harder for any issue to get off the hook. If your were unlucky to face a sizeable claim that's exactly when they'd be checking the small print- personally I'd take the 20 minutes.

I would give the insurance company a buzz they might not be bothered, but could save a lot of hassle if you had to claim for what ever reason

And some companies charge you just because you phone them!  You can't win with these rogues! >:(

Mine (John Lewis) don't care as long as everything is OEM.  If it isn't then they count it as a mod.  Mine is under the BMW Extended Warranty so everything I use is OEM - to stop BMW pulling a stunt like those mentioned above.

Thanks for all the info on insurance, they have no issue, so does anyone know the answer to my question about the wheel and tyre size?
