BMW 213 Style 19 inch alloys

Post by rickyclean » Wed Sep 23, 2015 9:51 am

Hello All

Bit of a random one no doubt, but I spotted something a bit odd with my tyres and I must admit I am a bit flummoxed.

I have the 213 19 inch alloys on my X5 and my front tyres need replacing. On putting in the details of my car into black circles it came back with the tyre is needed for the front of 255/50 R19 107 W. However on checking the fronts on my car they are 285/45 R19 111Y which is identical to the rear. After owning a couple of BMWs I have always had staggered tyres with smaller at the front, bigger at the rear, so this begs the following questions:

Did the previous owner put the wrong size tyre on the car?
Have a set of rear alloys replaced the front alloys?
How do I check the dimension of the alloy itself?
Did the SE Dynamic Pack put the same wheels at the front as the rears?
Is this dangerous?

Many Thanks in advanced for you help people.

Hi the fronts should be 255/50/19 rears 285/45/19 you can check the dimensions on alloywheelsdirect.net as they only do genuine wheels if you take the wheels off the offset and size are stamped on the inside of the wheels should be 9x19 et 48 fronts 10x19 et53 rears . I have heard of some people using 4 rears on the E70 as they recon that the wear is better however the steering will be heavier aswell as the extra weight on the front suspension so wont be recommended by BMW .
They did a square set up on the winter wheels however that were all 9x19 et 48 as recommended by BMW all running 255/50/19 .

Is your car an Se or Msport as they were usually only ever speced on the Se model as the Msport had a different offset on the rear et21 or et19 giving the car more of an aggressive stance and filling out the arches as they also had the wider arch kit fitted as standard .

Hi Sid10

Thanks for your feedback. Mine is an SE with Dynamic Pack - it has the 5 spoke 19 inch alloys... I fear either that I have 4 rears on the car... These are the wheels http://www.bmwstylewheels.com/bmw/213

Hi Rc just check that they have the same numbers stamped on the outside another BMW trick should be on one of the outside spokes in the middle 18 , 19 , 15 I think the rears might be slightly dished aswell !

Hi.....Sorry if im hyjacking the thread....But you guys seem to know what you are talking about.

Ive got a 2009 E70 with the 223 alloys on. With 255/50/19 on the front with 285/19 on the rear.
My question is.....Would it be possible to fit the larger 315 rear tyres on those wheels.....Its just that ive been offered a pair, but not sure if i could fit them on my wheels.
P.S Mine is a msport with the wider arches.

Cheers

You can fit them but they might look odd and the handling might suffer on the rears as the sidewall angle isn't ideal.  At least kerbing will be harder to do.. :)

Not seen 315/xx/19 before.  They're normally a 20" size.  Have you got the actual size?

One thing you must check is the weight rating (number & letter after the tyre size) which must not be lower than you have on the car.  Typical might be a 107W as an example.  X's need extra weight tyres so 107, 109, 112 are common.

As a general rule no bigger or lower than 20mm extra so 305 would be the biggest that I would fit ! if you have the M sport they are the wrong wheels as the offset is different , et19 or et21 on the Msport rears , et53 on the Se version .
Best to spend your money on some M sport alloys as they will still remain in the wheel arch whatever tyres you put on , you also run the risk of catching the inner arch as the tyre will be split between the wheel 10mm either side . the lower the offset the more to the outer arch , higher the offset the more inner arch .
Dont forget that the X6 wheels need to be rebored as the inner spigot size is only 72.6 against 74.1 on the E70 , just before you get tempted on a cheap set .

Sorry you are right x5sport.....the ones i were offered were 20"  :-[  So no good to me.
And thanks Sid......but im a bit lost with all this if im honest.......I basically love the look of the big wide tyres on the rear of some x5's ie the 315 tyres.
I sometimes think the 19" wheels with the 285's on the back look a little too narrow for my liking.
So what size tyre would you think would be the biggest(widest) i could put on without causing rubbing etc etc.

Failing that....i'll stick with the 285's

Thanks for all the advise guys

Hi can you pm me  a picture of the wheels on the car ? as I said the best thing would be to find a set of M sport wheels style 223M or later 467M wheels are 19" the wheels are dished so fill the arches better , the lower offset fits the arch better . I am not sure why they had different offsets to the Se but maybe to do with the extended arches .
I think that the 295/45/19 s would fit but if you can check the clearance between the tyre and the inner arch it needs to be at least 5mm . As the tyres are an unpopular size 295/45/19 they will be a lot more expensive .
Other options are to go with 20" wheels .
