22" wheels possible issue- rubbing noise

hi folks

here is my issue , there is a loud rubbing noise coming from the nearside front wheel , intermittent meaning its like something is rubbing every wheel turn.

this has only just happened however I was staggered to see that there is zero  (well about 2 mm) clearance between the top of the tyre and the top of the strut housing I think it is. surely that cant be right!!
please see the pics to get an idea.

anyone any thoughts?

Genuine or copy wheels?  Largest BMW OEM wheels are 21" so you could gave a spacing issue - as in the wheels need spacing to ensure clearance.  The only 'official' listed 22" rims are Hartge.

What tyre sizes are on them?

hi, no they are definitely aftermarket wheels. see pic  the tyre size  is 285 35 22

If it helps, the Hartge rims are either fitted with 265/35 R22 or 295/30 R22.  It's just possible that the tyre size is wrong and could be slightly too large a profile hence making contact with the suspension parts.

The sizes are quoted against 9.5" front and 10.5" rear widths so you need to confirm what you have and check the size used is a good match for the rim & car, as well as the spacing.

One note of caution with these cars is wrong tyre rolling diameters can kill the differentials!  The BMW AWD system is sensitive to having incorrect sizes fitted.  You will hear the diffs whining if there is a mismatch.  Ignore the whine and you get a large bill!

Hi again. It turns out the problem is the two heat shields brake dust covers or whatever they are called.  Can these be done away with they are broken .. Or do I really need to replace them ?

That's your main worry ^ and yep guards are there for a reason.

What offset are those? I have staggered 10.5x22 and 12x22 on my X5 and no inner wheel clearance issues.

The offset is usually stamped into the rums on the inner side, you usually have to remove one to see it, if it's an offset problem as set of 10 or 20 mm spacers should do it, check the clearance on the outer edge to the wheel arch to determin where the different spacers would leave the outer tyre clearance, you wouldn't want to leave the wheels proud of the bodywork, or it will fail the MOT

Its not that is the issue, its the distance from the tyre tread to the bottom of the upper arm ball joint.

FWIW I have same size front tyres as you (285/35/22) and previously to this 295/35/22 and neither caused problem. Are you sure yours is rubbing or hitting that part of the suspension? is there evidence of contact on the tread blocks?

Mine is lowered on KW coilovers (wound down very low) and again no issue.

no the issue is definitely the heat / dust shields one was broken and rubbing.  I have another problem now in that the tyres are not run flats, no spare , third row seating ... just great...

Yes I have same tyres, non RFT. Aswell as 3rd row seat. Looks like you made that decision going 22s as did I

To add my 2 cents worth. It looks damn good. As for the brake disk dust shields. I had a problem with one of mine rubbing suffered for two weeks then the other started doing same. Spoke to a mechanic from BMW, who told me to cut them off and chuck them away as they are a bad design and prone to failing on the mountings. I did just that and they have now been off for five months with no problems.

The clearance is no issue as the piece and the wheel are fixed and move together so as long as there is a gap there the two can never touch, as for the guards just fit new ones
