Has anyone fitted a sat nav setup to a non nav car. What is needed and what's involved

It is possible and involved removing the interior, running in the new loom, sat nav DVD in the boot and new head unit etc.  It is VERY expensive to to and to be honest you get better performance from a Tom Tom or Garmin.

Even more expensive and still not worth the effort.  Will all have to be coded to the car, licence keys bought - if BMW will provide them - for the functions you will have to add.

Having both the professional nav (Opt SA609), and a Garmin nüvi 3598 I can safely say the Garmin (only £300) is far better, and you can have at least ten of them for less than the likely cost of the BMW system.

If you have the funds then go for it, but.......

Thank you all for your advice on this. I have only had the car for a couple of months now and new on here and will no doubt pop up with more questions about it soon

It's an option on all versions and depends upon what 'packs' you order.  I agree though that given the price of BMW generally, it ought to be included, but wasn't on any of ours from 2004 until now.  For the E70 it was part of the Infotainment system and was not able ordered without that - for £2,500.

BMW being BMW give you only a basic build onto which you then add what you want.  Every so often it does get added as part of a 'promotion' to help clear the order books and get numbers up......incentivising?

I am surprised too it has the shark fin and the sat nav on the I drive. I was hoping it would just be a case of buying the lower disc drive plug and play

Exactly what options have you got?

The shark fin is the mobile phone aerial site - amongst other inclusions.  The GPS antenna is below the windscreen on the E70 (I think) and located in the dash itself.  I know the E53 has it in the tailgate spoiler, but then the nav computer is in the boot.  The CIC has it all up front, and the nav data is hard drive based if you have the facelifted version (LED angel eyes).

Its not an led angel eye. I am also on the e30zone which has a link to getting your build spec from Bmw. I will look into this and see exactly what I have and haven't got

If it's appearing in the idrive then it should be present? Are sure it isn't a fault?

I once fitted sat nav to a non nav 6 series (2004) . It was actually really easy to do, just swapped the computer behind the dash for one with nav and it appeared in the idrive. No coding or anything. I routed the gps antenna to sit just under the dash and it worked fine through the screen. Pro nav would need a screen and possibly new idrive controller.
