Re: 4.4 problems
Oh dear, the dreaded suspension problem........the sensors are the cheapest and easiest parts to try first. The rest start racking up expenses very quickly.......I would consider coilovers unless you have a really deep pocket or a good warranty........check my thread on suspension issues! My X was luckily mostly covered by warranty and BMW UK but they can be hugely expensive to troubleshoot.
There are lots of threads on the suspension if you search on the forum, and descriptions of how to fix leaky compressors, valves etc.
Basically, start checking the sensors first, then the airbags - these can and do die of old age! The suspension has an ECU which can go faulty as well as valves and a compressor (under tin hat in wheel well). Plus there is an actuator a relay and a few other bits. Hope you get it sorted.

Re: 4.4 problems
Ye on my mates snap on it said rear sensor so we changed it but still the same will have to take it back to him and check again may change it to springs on the back
Re: 4.4 problems
Allegedly there is an issue in that the sensors listed on parts database have didferent number than that originally fitted. Order ideally from original number of removed part.
