Replacing EGR valve - Tips?

HI there.

I am replacing the EGR valve on my 2006 3.0d X5.

Its a tricky little bugger to remove-considering the bottom two screws are so hard to get at.

What I'm wondering is this:

The little tube connected to the side will not budge. I guess after 5 years and a lot of engine heat, its well and truly stuck on.

Has anyone any tips for removing it or am I best to snip it at the end of its receiver and place the newly cut tube end on the new EGR?

Is there an easier way to get at those bottom bolts? Or am I along the right track by going for the top 2 bolts first, then the one on the bottom left, which then allows you to rotate the entire valve upwards whilst giving you slightly more access to the final 4th bolt.

Any help greatly appreciated as always.

I havent replaced the egr valve as such but i did take it off with the inlet manifold yesterday.
The jubile clip that holds the liite pipe in place is tac welded to the pipe conector and must be totaly unwound and then you can prize the junction/pipe conector apart and push it onto the small pipe.The liitle tube on the side just pulls off and then the other big pipe has a large circlip around it which slots into a groove in the pipe this can just be pushed/sprung off.

Ah yes ! I was being lazy by leaving the manifold on!

Its the little tube on the side I can't get off. Safe enough to cut it would you say?

I would say so as it's only rubber.Double check that there is plenty of play in the length of the hose and snip it close to the valve.
Has yours perished with the cold as mine just pulled of (to be sure we are talking about the tiny, say 8mm-10mm hose that comes of the valve heading towards the rear of the engine bay right?)

please note that i am no mechanic and would hate to give the wrong advise so be carefull

perhaps try a liitle heat on the hose first to see if it will loosen up and pull off.....goood luck

Because they get full up of cokey grunge and seize up.
If I ever manage to buy a 3.0D then I'll be replacing mine with a bypass. Much more free flowing as it doesn't have the valve part in it and it won't be introducing the muck back into the engine.

Is there any risk with replacing the EGR with a bypass? I could be wrong but I remember reading on a 5 series forum that removing the EGR value causes the turbo to run hotter as the gases help keep it cooler (from memory or something similar to that). Is there any truth in this?

To plug or not to plug !

So am I right in thinking that in order to plug the EGR valve, all you need do is remove the small rubber pipe on the left of the valve....put a screw or golf T into it and tie it up?

Would I be better off plugging or fitting a bypass valve rather than replacing a fault one?

It does seem pretty negligent to be recycling all that dirt through the engine-once you can get over the environmental conscience of course !!

Just stopping the thing working will help which is what blacking the pipe off will do.
The actual EGR valve itself is pretty restrictive as it has parts inside it sitting in the air flow. An EGR bypass kit off ebay doesn't have parts in the air flow so you not only get a more laminar air flow but the pipe physically, has a large cross sectional area due to not having all those parts.

This is the old EGR valve from my 02 plate 530D.
You can see the black crap and how much stuff is actually interfering with the air flow...
The white crap is just oxidisation where it's been left outside.




Here's a closer picture of the back or down stream side showing the gunk.



Dunno why I kept it. Or why I knew where it was but there you go

Its really very easy thing to remove EGR valve. You can do it at your home also. For this you have to do is first of all locate the EGR valve, you will find it at the driver side intake manifold. First disconnect the connection done with the EGR valve. Like vacuum hose and green tube connected to it. Than remove the gasket. Than unbolt the EGR valve with the help of the allen key tool and other screw driver. After unbolting it you can now take off the EGR valve and proceed to the replacing with another.

Has anyone actually deleted or bypassed their EGR valve on their X5 diesel? If so, did you get any errors or codes ?
Any improvement? Please chime in, as I'm thinking of Bypassing the EGR in my 2006 e53 3.0d...
