New car is this normal???
New car is this normal???
Had my e70 m50d for 6 weeks now
1) usb charge points - very weak both glove box and arm rest phone will show it's charging but typically gain a few % over an hour.
2) seat belt innertia lock not happening till very fast an no pre locking on use of breaks
3) gear box if you select manual gear it then can get locked in manual and does not shift up
4) side view cameras missing front of the car feels like they should be angled forwards a few more degrees to catch the front corner.
5) condensation in rear lights after a wash.
6) sapphire black paint work picking up scratches very easily.
7) comfort seat side bolster I am normal build and like them fully inflated they deflate an re inflate getting gout and back in but they are always a few clicks off fully inflated
thanks

1. Normal. USB charging is 'current limited' so if your device needs a higher rate then it takes longer.
2. Normal. That's how inertia reel belts work unless specially built with added tensioning. Not part of any BMW I have owned.
3. Normal. That's why it's called 'Manual', you are in charge of the box.
4. Normal. They are side view, not front corner view.
5. Normal. Depends how much though. I only get a little at the top and it soon goes. Keep an eye on it though in case it gets worse in which case you may need new units. All ours do it to some extent.
6. Normal. Black paint will always show every mark unless you put a ceramic coat on it and use special cleaning techniques. Had it on several dark coloured cars which is why I don't buy dark painted cars any longer. UK roads are too messy!
7. Mine do it too. I assumed it was just part of the normal seat operation for when getting in and out. Passenger seat does it too.

Re: New car is this normal???
On 6), often it is the drying that scratches - not so much the washing itself.
I use a DI vessel to rinse the car, not touch it at all during drying and my Carbon Black has 0 scratches or marks. My black Porsche is also scratch-less using that technique.
My lights stay dry by the way - never had condensation in them on the X5. Do get it on the Abarth though.

Re: New car is this normal???
The belts are a bit concerning my wife hit her head on the dash when brake most cars much more than a brisk tug locks them with these you have to be nearly throwing speed to lock them.
I am only trying to charge a standard smart phone and it hardly adds a few % an hour is there a fix other than purchasing a separate charger which is a bit daft given they are designed to charge phones etc.
my wife has a 2006 120d same paint colour and hardly any scratches it appears to be far more resistant.

Re: New car is this normal???
Are you using the OEM cable to charge, or a copy? Give us clue about which smartphone? My iPhone 6+ takes a good deal longer when compared to my iPhone 4 on the same connection.
Normal braking will not trigger the locks on seat belts - nor should it cause a passenger to be thrown forward like that.

Re: New car is this normal???
Cable is vital. My OEM cable charges 10 times faster than my £5 Amazon copy ...

Re: New car is this normal???
Get some poorboys polish for the paint work it hides the scratches.
Re: New car is this normal???
galaxy s6 with original cable.
was normal braking after getting a quote for pads and disks at over 1500 pounds it might be cheaper to crash than use them !
looks like I will have to get a separate charger. are there any power injectors you can use to allow it to charge and use media at the same time?

Re: New car is this normal???
Media via Bluetooth should get round that issue

Re: New car is this normal???
Don't use the USB to charge a phone, use the cig lighter point with a USB adaptor - it says this in my X4 manual. I used an adaptor in my 40d and had no problem, the USB would not charge an IPad but it did through the cig point adaptor - worth a try

Re: New car is this normal???
Using Waze in the X5 connected to the USB charger via the Apple cable in the car still drains the battery of the phone (i.e. it does not charge at all when the phone is very active).
Bit odd design from the USB port in the car though.

Re: New car is this normal???
has anyone uses a powered from usb 2.5" drive with it? I have a drive that has one usb to power and the other for data.
Re: New car is this normal???
Quite likely the CIC drive won't recognise it as there will be no driver in the iDrive. The operating system is a form of Unix.
It will also depend on its power needs. If it doesn't like your phone it may not like a hard drive either as they usually need more current. The ports are not designed to give anything more than very low power for charging needs (based on what was around in that production year) and thumb drives.
The current limit is far lower than a laptop can provide. I had a Road Angel plugged in to mine and although it worked, it barely charged and the car logged an overload on the iDrive which was picked up be the dealer and flagged to me.
You may be able to get a charging plate for your phone if you have the cradle in the armrest.

Re: New car is this normal???
What madness and poor design to to provide charge current
Re: New car is this normal???
It was right back then, but has increased since as newer phones need more. BMW have been behind the curve on mobile phone tech for more than 10 years..... >:(
The Bluetooth farce in the mid-2000s was (or should have been) an embarrassment for them!
