I bought an X5 2001 3.0d sport in October, love it, I also had this error around 3 times (always 5C or below) but if I turn the car off and restart its fine so I have put it down to a electrical gremlin and have thought no more about it.

Cold Weather does Xes no good at all, especially the xtreme temps of recent weeks - "suspension inactive "messages can pop up due to the cold affe cting the sensors, parking sensors go moggy in the cold and wet and oil coolers pop their clogs....sometimes causing "hydrolock" damage to the engine. Theres a guy with a 5 series on the 'Land whose engine failed totally in the heavy snow period and garage claimed it was "flood" damage with snow/water being sucked in - similar to the hydrolock.

My 4.8 has thrown up the occasional suspension message in the extreme cold but it always goes away and car feels fine. Oil cooler split, though, Xmas Eve - luckily warranty kicked in or it would have cost around £800 or so

Roll on warmer weather, please for the sake of us and our Xes!!!!

Seen it several times and it can be related to a dying battery as well. Never actually had a problem with it though.

One thing I have found which reduces the appearance of error messages has been to get in and turn the key to Pos 2 but not start the car. Wait for all the usual warnings to go out and then start the car - this normally takes as long as it takes you to put your seat belt on.

Sometimes the fifty odd control and sensor modules (are there really that many!?) I'm told these things have in them have not fully booted up into 'operate' mode and they throw a code back to the main system giving odd warnings which are 'ghost' warnings rather than real.

Wonder if like "X5Sport" says that it could be down to the battery as mine cranks over for a long time then starts up, think I'll probably change it glad BMW put the battery in a nice and accessible place.
Amazing that you spend a lot of money buying a "BMW X5" and they seem not like the cold (had the door locks freeze up during the cold spell, gearbox's weak point and different sensor problems). Must admit that I don't think the bulid quality is as good on the X compared to my E39 528i.

cranking for a long time could be a number of things inc rail pressure (injectors) glow plugs,glow control unit,fuel pump relay etc etc.
I have just had to change my glow control unit and plugs due to the same problem.

I reluctantly agree re the e39 comments mind my old man has an early e39 and it just keeps going and going with very little maintenance along the way compared to my e53 which i have done a lot more on in a lot less time .
But then which would i prefer to drive his or mine ......no contest it's the x5 every day of the week.................untill mine has broke down due to a poxy sensor of course and i need to borrow his to get the kids to school.

Sorry "x555" I forgot to mention that I've got a 4.4 not diesel, must i admit that that I do prefer the X to drive and it still gets a lot of attention from admirer's even though its now nearly 10yrs old

I got the "suspension inactive "message a couple of times when programming with the scanner.

Thought I had screwed something the first time it came up.

But an on/off with the key cleared it each time.

Don't talk to me about electrical problems with the X's. Although, when mine came up with suspension inactive it cost over £2K to rectify (new suspension control module/acctuator/valve and pump itself)....

if 'suspension inactive keeps' popping up it will need the system rest correcty or it will always popup from time to time

we have had customers in that have had every think changed only to find the system just needed restting correcty

C'mon jason spill the beans on how it needs re-setting, is there a little trick like the gearbox re-set or will I need to come over and see you sometime

The self level susp inact message has been popping up occasionally on my 3.0d X5 for the last few weeks now. Each time the engine is restarted, it resets itself and the warning goes away for a day or two. It appears to be more prevalent in cold and/or wet weather. The message only comes up after a bit of driving (never there at start up).

The ride height on the car all seems fine, and I haven't heard the compressor kick in at all, so I assume the air bags aren't leaking.

I wondered whether it was an indication that the battery was on its last legs - it's over 7 years old - but the voltage before start up seems reasonable (c.11.5V after sitting over night), and the magic eye is showing green. Besides, as the error isn't there at start up, I would have thought that the condition of the battery was unrelated. The two fuses in the boot all seem good as well.

This leaves me to wonder whether it is one of the ride height sensors. I am loathed to take it to the dealers who will charge me £100 to look at the car - beyond what I have already done, is there any way of identifying where the problem lies?

Any advice appreciated.

I've had this message pop up when using scanner 1.4.

Take the key out and restart and all is well!
