X5 won't start
X5 won't start
Hi all probs again I have a 03 x5 3.0d started it today turned it back off and tried to start it again and it wouldn't start turns over but won't start founds like fuel what do I check first
Re: X5 won't start
Could be a number of things....
Fuel pump, fuel filter, starter motor, glow plug control unit , random electrical issue or even faulty immobiliser are possibles, as could be something simple like a flat battery.
Would likely cost hundreds to eliminate by swapping components.
Ideally get it taken to an independent specialist if you don't have spare parts to swap out and eliminate with.
Try jump starting first.
A basic current or circuit tester will let you know if any fuses blown as will swapping out relevant fuses ... If so kg the later do make sure fuse loading is correct/ample for the circuit concerned.
A half decent and compatible diagnostic reader may assist in pointing towards the issue but be honest with yourself as to what you will do with the device provided info.....assuming you interpret info of potential use.
May seem obvious but auto equipped cars only start in P or N !

Re: X5 won't start
A cheap fix worth a try is the fuel pump relay. £10 component located above the front glovebox. If it fails the engine will crank away but there is no fuel so it won't fire! Ours did this a few years ago.
The fix notes are on the forum somewhere. Basically drop the front fuse box out and on top of it are a set of relays. The one you want is No1 on this diagram..

It's a fairly common failure as the contacts burn out. DIY job if you feel like it if that doesn't solve it then you can work into the more expensive options.....

Re: X5 won't start
Is it OK when cold???
If so I'd look at injectors...
(Seems to be my current answer for everything lately!!!!!)
(Still beats gearboxes!!)

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Re: X5 won't start
I put a fuel pump really on it and it made on difference so i got it taken over to argyle diesel they did some tests and they put a new fuel pump on it and it's running good again
Re: X5 won't start
Glad it's fixed. Relay worth a punt given the cost, and at least you know both it and the pump are now good ones
