My X5 has let me down YET again - different issue (monitoring rail pressure)
My X5 has let me down YET again - different issue (monitoring rail pressure)
Hi all, I have owned my 2001 3.0d X5 for nearly 5 years and has always had expensive maintenance costs but has never left me stranded until now. Unfortunately it has twice in 4 days for 2 different issues.
The latest issues, it wont start, it cranks but refuses to fire. I scanned it with BMW scanner 1.4.0 and everytime I try to start it I get the following code stored
09f6(2500) monitoring rail pressure at start
It doesn't say too high or too low so does this mean it cant monitor it at all so it doesn't allow the injectors to fire?
I can hear the high pressure pump under the passenger side running and a something running continuously in the engine bay with ignition on.
The other strange thing I noticed when looking for potential issues, I removed the cap to the coolant reservoir and it is constantly spraying coolant out of the small hole near the top of the reservoir neck with ignition on.
Anyone any suggestions on this?
Thanks and much appreciated
Gareth

First could be an injector issue.
If one or more is passing then rail pressure will drop.
I had similar codes on mine due to 2 dodgy injectors.
Except mine wouldn't start when hot.

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

sorry to hear abaout your woes.
i dont know about your first issue, but the water flow is normal, its an electric water pump which should run with ignition on and its failure is a common reason for webasto heaters to malfunction through overheating.
hope you get it sorted.

Sounds like the high pressure pump has or is failing. You need live data to see what pressure is in the rail whilst cranking. Im not too up on the 3.0d but would expect to see 300 bar (30KPA) or similar.

Re: My X5 has let me down YET again - different issue (monitoring rail pressure)
Hi all and thanks for the reply's to date.
Since my BMW scanner 1.4.0 wont let me access live data, I got INPA up and running. I have taken screenshots while idling (rail pressure is around 300mbar while idling but is @60mbar during cranking - what's normal as I assume this is way too low.)
Its also obvious the adjustment for the injector on cylinder 2 is way off the rest.
My X5 now wont start unless I use easy-start. If rail pressure is 300mbar during idling does this mean pre supply fuel pump and high pressure fuel pump is ok?
Any advice greatly appreciated

I dont know what the specific rail pressure figures are for your X5 Gareth but easy start will damage your engine if used frequently, sorry I cant be of more help

Thanks for the reply, yeah the X5 is off the road, I have only used easy start a few times to help diagnose the issue.
Anyone any ideas on next step?
Thanks

Similar results as mine with 2 dodgy injectors
I would seriously look to getting them tested properly at a Bosch injector centre
At least you'll know if they are your issue or not but getting my failed ones refurbed solved my issues

Re: My X5 has let me down YET again - different issue (monitoring rail pressure)
Collected my X5 from the mechanics today, turned out to be a high pressure fuel pump on the engine.
New tyres and MOT now required, hopefully no more surprises as I have poured a lot of money into her this year lol.
Still need an injector replaced as engine is slightly lumpy and INPA is showing 1 needs replaced
