Every diesel I've ever owned has puffed a bit of smoke on start up.  I would only be worried if it was churning out loads of blue or black smoke when driving as that is a fuelling or turbo issue normally.

Mine was the same at 145k , quite smokey and smelt of diesel and if you gave it the beans it was like a smoke screen(very james bond) anyway the fuel injection system fault came up so took it to my local specialist and had a diagnostic, turns out 4 plugs were gone and the module, no3 injector and an EGR fault..... after having all new plugs and module fitted along with the injector and De-coking the EGR , manifold and inlets it runs like a dream, a whisp when you start it up and a whisp when you boot it.... mind you,it was £800  :hypo: ..Worth it though, I found it quite embarrassing lol

Before winter shows her teeth again....
Can some one explain what the bulky webasto unit does & how it operates to make a warm winter start etc ??

I have one of these lumpy units under my bonnet & no idea what it does ....

It circulates and warms engine coolant.

Designed to get Diesel engines out of 'cold run' mode faster.  It was a way of improving engine emissions, and with mods can add aux heating function too.

Newer models don't have them by default, only as an expensive upgrade option.

so... its definitely fitted...

How would I make the webasto work,

or programme it to come on at a certain time,,,,

and will it draw so much power that it flattens a battery ?

You will need to enable it in the coding.
Then you will have Aux Heat option on OBD, which allows you to allocate a timer to it.

It will draw current but will (should) shut off automatically when it detects low voltage that could cause starting issues.

It will also not run if you have low fuel, or the outside and/or coolant temperatures are above a certain threshold.

You can test it by jabbing 12v on pin1 of the webby.
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...

I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

There is a huuuugggggeeee thread in the E53 area that tells you all you need to know, and how to do it, and even diy ideas for remotely controlling the Webo.

Loads of folks have done it very successfully, but you must follow the right rules or you could mess it up.

It will operate in its default mode as a coolant heater when the air temps fall to 5C or below.  It should not run if the battery volts or fuel levels are too low.
