X5 replacement thoughts

Post by Imy » Sun Jun 07, 2015 9:18 pm

after dicking around for the last 8months I have decided I am definitely getting rid of the X and after originally choosing an E70 as the replacement vehicle and then an E60 M5 I have narrowed it down to two choices.
E39 M5 or an E90 335i.

The 335i is rarer in the 4 door version but I've seen one I'm interested in. It's 93k miles but turbos were replaced earlier in the yr and full bmw service.

I've seen a face lifted M5 with 123k with most bmw service and a very comprehensive history.

I can't decide between the two. Appreciate they are completely different animals.

I commute into the city and I got a Leaf Gt-r to drop kids off to childminders in morning so this vehicle would strictly be a weekend car. Leaning towards the M5 but I do love the looks of the E90!

Any thoughts or opinions?

Did you really say an M5 with 123k on it?  I thought you always needed a second mortgage to run those, so I would be inclined to go with the less fun 335i ….

Yes that's what I really said. An E39 M5? I have heard actually they are pretty solid. Didn't hear about no second mortgage needed.

Kjb I am struggling at the moment. There aren't alot of e39 face lifts with low mileage at a sensible price. I didn't think that sort of mileage with sensible extensive service history and receipts would be a major issue?

Depends what your budget is,

My old M5' 14k worth of warranty work in 3 months, but I was being picky  ;)

I test drove an E39 M5 a few years ago when I had my 840ci, wasn't that impressed really.
I prefer autos too, so that probably swayed me.
Looked at the E46 M3 too, but as I prefer autos, and the problems that I've read about the semi auto SMG gearbox has put me off.
I would be more interested in the 335i, but even more in the 335d , which torque figures is way in front, and will deliver 40 MPG, as my ex boss had one. If it was an auto I would have bought it, but was a manual, so gave it a swerve unfortunately as he only got 12 K trade in on a new 330d Msport.
What's the 1 series 330i/ 335i ? Wheels on the 335d, are they non OEM or Alpina ?

Edit. Thanks a lot , got me looking on Autotrader for a 335d now !!!!!!!

14k worth of warranty work? Jeezuz, I am just in the process of putting a presentation together to present to the mrs as to why an e39 m5 may be the right choice!!

Shad  -  cant afford a c63 right now.

Budget ive got is no more than 10k - this is purely down to the fact the mrs is considering going back to school and changing careers. current career is very demanding and she misses out on a lot of time with the kids.

So I thought I would be sensible with the budget and have one that I could easily afford on just my salary.

Never really considered a 335d... I think they may be out of the price range anyways.

Black one is a 335d with Alpinas, that cracked frequently  >:(

M5 had a new gearbox/vanos/ Diff/ oil separators and a load of bits and pieces. I had just renewed the warranty for £1850 at the time, so thought it rude not to capitalise  ;)

Blue one is a 130. The only car I ever regret selling. It was like a go kart round the lanes, once I ditched the runflats.

just to add i took the e91 in for a clutch today and got a e39 loan car, addmitedly a 520i but it drove like a tank and felt seriously old and dated, the nearest thing i could compare it to was years ago my dad had a 5 series J reg whatever e number that is maybe e34 (not sure) but really not impessed at all, it was very under powered where and m5 wont be but just everything from the key to the interior felt very dated compared even to an e46
