Roaming nomad

Post by snrbrtsn » Sun May 31, 2015 9:29 pm

Evening gents
I'm a roaming nomad from bmwland
Whilst I don't own an X, I have the imbetweener,  which I stumbled across when viewing an x6
Whilst introducing myself, I thought I would extend my introduction with a question

Obligatory pics

Question (if I may)

Have any of you had problems with pano roof shades
I'm booked into dealer for replacement, whilst given rough quote, was wondering if there is anyone with experience of undertaking or had work done (I'm a hands on "I can break anything type of person")

Ideally cost, but ultimately time frame (booked in on Friday, but vacation on Sunday so need car), is one day realistic ?

On the E70?  Yes, just the same as the E53 it seems that as the E70 is getting older so the pano roof issues that plagued the Mk1 are beginning to surface on the early Mk2.  Cost about the same....£2k for a new cassette, or you can diy it and disable the rear section.  The glass seems to be the issue rather than the shade though.

The X6 doesn't have a pano roof so no worries there.  My 'standard' sunroof works fine after almost 5 years.  Of course it has a manual shade (closing not opening). >:(

Nice wheels on it as well.

Never closed the shades so no idea about the wear issue.

Thanks gents, I had read the X5 had similar traits, though good it does seem apparent
The GT has a roller shade, as opposed to the panels, my darling child protested at me not opening and proceeded to push up on the roof forcing the blind out of the track, hence need for replacement  :'( mechanism still working so hoping it's a simple (yeah right) case of roof lining down strip out blind and replace

Ha, guess you've seen inside, nice place of solitude & comfort!
think the interior is the best selling point of the Gt

Welcome on board.

The GT has grown on me and surprised that 535dboy likes it. He's normally very hard to please. Mellowing in his old age.

Silly question, but as the shade has just been pushed out of its track can you not just have it placed back in the guides?

i have tried re tracking the blind, it's a thin fabric what's held in the outer track, with the roof in place it's hard to get in, primarily to see how to do it but also the fabric allows little give, I tried with an endoscope to no avail
The only way of accessing is with the shade retracted, because it's out of the track it scrunches on the roller making the refit even harder
I looked at pulling the headlining, but it appears a big job with plenty of scope for damaging trims, through gritted teeth it's looking like I'm at the mercy of the dealer!
Pretty much prepared for the violating!

The GT is a marmite thing, a lot of critism over them, but once driven they are an excellent compromise between saloon and SUV & offers so much practical space and proven very versatile as an all rounder, albeit proving pretty difficult to replace

I have just fitted a dash cam and used interior trim removal tools to get the cable running through the headlining, have you tried those sort of tools to move the side trim?

I did look, but admitted defeat to myself, the harsh reality is I have a drawer full of trim removal tools, don't think twice about doing other people's car, though this has me foxed, in part due to the lack of information / schematic and probably the fact that I've never removed a headling before and certainly never ripped into a pano roof
There's a lot to be said for the old fashion Haynes manual (along with a lot of critism) though the pictures do have a purpose, instead I'll most get some spotted youth in his first year of apprenticeship ripping things apart with no care in the world!
