520d, squeaky belt

Post by Merc? No, BM! » Sun May 31, 2015 7:36 pm

Thank you to global moderator pvr welcoming us, BMWLanders!  :)

Hope I may take the liberty of asking a question about my humble 2009 520d (E61).

I started to notice a faint squeaky noise coming from the engine when running. Opening the bonnet it appears to be coming from the rotating of a belt (cam belt?).

What's the likely cause of the noise and what should be done about it?

Cheers all

I have never heard a cambelt squeak (only tick), so would imagine it is more like a waterpump belt.

+1 on that not being a cam belt.  As pvr suggests, it's more likely to be an accessory belt for the a/c, alternator, power steering, water pump etc.

Unless of course a camshaft/crankshaft bearing is about to fail... :o

Hi and welcome. Sqeeks seemingly coming from the drive belt area can sometimes be a sign that the rubber section of the crankshaft pulley is starting to fail. I had this many years ago on a non BMW car, but read on here recently that a member had it happen to their BMW.

Hopefully it's just a worn belt or tensioner though :)

:D

I think the official term is partnership working.

Happily no bun fights between us to wear the trousers or boss hat.

Re the belt noise get it  found and sorted soon to avoid a costly repair if it wraps itself around other belts and or fan.

That's exactly what it turned out to be.  :sweatdrop:

Mechanic will be replacing fan belt, timing belt, tensioner and I think some rotating thingy. Sorry can't remember the name for it...

Bit of expense, but not exorbitant. Thankfully.
