In theory, if they know who hosted the server and it is a 'physical' thing rather than a virtual machine then someone (with all the right permissions obviously) could get access to the box and reset the master password sets.  That at least would allow the system to be brought up and tested before being released to service - if that is the way it is decided to go as a legacy.

It will also need a change in the ownership of the site domain registration.

Not exactly an important thing given all of the other events surrounding this, and something for his family to decide about when the time is right.

Sounds like it was all very sudden, and very very sad for all who knew him.

Read an update on the FB group and really shocked like most.

Good to see so many familiar "faces" here, just a shame that it's all for such a terrible reason.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I kinda feel it would be appropriate to make some kind of public display of appreciation for everything Matt did and built for all of our benefit. Whether that be a meet, a collection for charity, re-establishing the site - whatever it might be, but only with the support of his family if that is something they would want / appreciate. But clearly it's really not a priority at the moment.

I think the site formed a large part of our lives (for good or bad) - personally didn't realise how much I frequented it until I couldn't access it!  ::)

In the meantime, how does xdrivers feel about hosting us former and now displaced Landers? ;) Have owned two E70's, so hopefully that counts! ;)

As much as Pistonheads is a good resource, I can't stand posting on it as there's always a smart ar se who's out for a scrap.

I agree we should do something. Problem is not all BMWLander's will find this thread, or the facbook one (I don't use it).

I was the same, until last week when I was checking every device to see what was happening with the site, I didn't realise how often I was on the site. I seem to have got a lot of work done recently.
Don't know about pistonheads, but as for as my new car,  which is due next week, Porsche forums are all about 911's as expected I suppose. Unless your in USA. So even as a non BMW owner I will miss BMWLand, other forums just don't seem to compare.

Agree on all counts.

I saw Murray - Verbarthe and Sean - snrbtsn on the Livster's Pistonheads thread, together with Woocebrillis and guess some of them may have had contact via PM with others as I have with James 535dboy and RickT previously. I'm guessing Murray will have had contact with slim and Peter up in Scotland. I used have to have kleynie's details but appear to have mislaid them but I'm guessing we could pull together a core representation?

Olli and Brocky no doubt know a lot of the guys and I remember Olli sold his Alpina to Harry.

I agree something should be done as a tribute or the likes, I would hope the 'Land will come back at some point once logistics have been assessed.

Someone has an element of access to the site as the message changed from database update to the current message.

What sad news, my thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

Been a subscribed member of the land before I got my e46 back in 2006-2007. Got to be the best car forum I registered with, great people on there, and it would be great to see it back up in the future.

Good to see some of the usual crew from there on here

Hopefully if xdrivers dont mind, use 'Landers could use this thread to share any updates etc as the FB 'Land page is a bit thin, plus this is the top result in Google now for BMW Land down.
