New... old lurker 2006 e53 3.0d Sport - Manual 'box

Post by kave » Mon May 25, 2015 11:37 am

Hello all,

Been lurking on here for years, aspiring to own one of BMW's finest.  Finally found myself in a position to take the plunge.  Had to be manual gearbox, so as you will know, rare as hens teeth, particularly a well specc'd example that has been looked after.  Luckily hit jackpot and picked up a 2006 3.0d manual, full service history, with a pretty healthy spec sheet including pano roof, heated nappa with lumbar support, heated steering wheel, bi-xenon, 20" 168s with le mans arches and ally side steps.

Hoping to finally add something to forum, instead of just leeching.

Hi & Welcome proper.

From pics the car looks smart enough. Sport exclusive arch and rim kitted manuals even more a rarity. Heated wheel too plus the seats  - briliant find........Nice spec other than abscene of comms pack.

I will be intersted to see what mpg returns you get driving to posted limits urban , mixed and motorway when its warmed up and assuming not in need of anything.

Thanks for pics  - shame about the air freshener ;)

Looks smart that. And like you say, manual x5's are a rare beast.

Think all manual cars will be endangered species in a decade or so!

Hi an welcome to the forum,

As AW8 said the manual was a rare beast, from memory X5sport said a dealer would want a 10k deposit on one if you ordered a manual one , which probably accounts for their rarity.

You have found a very good spec car and look forward to hearing how the fuel consumption is on your car compared to the diesel autos.

Correct, which is indeed why I paid the extra for the auto......which promptly 'grenaded' not long out of warranty and BMW GB walked away.. >:(

As requested here are some MPG figures.  Gone through a couple of full tanks now.

Did a trip from Southampton to Leeds, around 240 miles each way.  On the way up was stuck on cruise @70 and there must be about 30miles of 50mph average speed limits, so pretty steady going, and the computer clocked just over 47MPG

Return leg was on a Friday afternoon, wanting to avoid rush hour, I was not hanging about, although still had a stint of 50mph average limits, after which pushed on reasonably hard, nothing close to licence losing territory though.  Average for the entire journey dropped to 43MPG.  This was all motorway of course, and good summer temps of 20degC, would expect this to be ~15% worse in winter temps.

After resetting trip 2, around town, in traffic, with the odd spirited junction getaway, the computer settles off in the 33MPG region.  So combined, it settles in the 37MPG region.

Again all of this is nice summer temperatures, and only going by what the on-board computer readings say, which based on one tank to tank fill up calculation, is around 10% too generous.

I am pleasantly surprised given the weight and power of the thing.

After driving my snappy little VAG 1.9PD TDI 4 pot though, the engine feels a bit slow to respond sometimes, maybe a bit too much flywheel.

All in all though, happy camper.  Definitely a lovely place to be.  For me nothing else comes remotely close for the money.

That is impressive computer data.

I knew the manual faceldit had superior on paper mpg compared to auto but that's very interesting reading.

The examples motorway runs with roadwork limit complaince quite representative for those curious re consumption on longer trips.

Should you ever feel so motivated it might be intesering if you calculate by brim to brim.

Seems you appear to have a healthy car.
