Hi just looking for a bit of advice;
I have recently purchased an x1 on a 60 plate, having previously owned 3 series.
Can anybody tell me is it normal for the steering to feel so heavy?
Thanks

Re: New X1 owner
Check your tyre pressures. If too low it may cause a 'heavy' feel. Fluid level OK?

First thing I did was tyre pressure the garage had put 26 all round which was incorrect according to the data plate
When you say fluid are you referring to power steering fluid?

Sorry, yes I was. Have you got hydraulic only, or electro hydraulic assist? The electric bit should work at lower speeds to add a bit of boost to the normal hydraulic function.
We don't have many X1 owners on here so may be a while before you get a definitive answer...

Hi timo, yes it is! The heavy steering was a deal breaker for me 3 years ago until the salesman mentioned servotronic steering as an option. He loaned me an X3 with it fitted and lo and behold the steering was light at low speeds and firms up at higher speeds.

I just got a 2011 23d last week - the steering is heavy!!
Don't notice when up to speed, but low speed manouvres are quite a struggle!
I now see it as a free workout............... :-[

Ditto.....compared to my 330D (E91) the steering at parking speeds is very heavy. Frankly I don't mind as it deters you from turning it whilst at crawling speed and scrubbing the tyres
