Gearbox Problem ????

Post by john0459 » Sun May 17, 2015 4:28 am

Hi
I am having trouble with my Auto box on a 04 E53 . On starting and driving off my gearbox seems to stuggle to get out of 3/4 gear and will not go above 25-30 mph . If i stop switch off then restart and drive off the problem clears . There are no error codes showing and its as if the veh goes into some sort of limp mode . Anyone any ideas please.
John

Locking into 3rd is the limp mode.  It can also lock into 5th depending upon driving conditions.

You need the gearbox codes read which will show what the issue is within the transmission.

Hard to tell which but might be the basis of the problem as it could be torque converter, oil pump, mechatronic unit servos (control the gear changes), clutch or brake packs.  It could be in the Xdrive itself.  Or it could just be a failing battery throwing odd problems out.

If it does appear to be the box then you can try a fluid/filter change but if that doesn't cure it then it may in the worst case need a rebuild.  If (and only if) that is the case then you are looking at £1,500 upwards.

Until you get chance to get the codes read, do a "soft reset" on the gearbox, do a search on here for it.

Get the codes read before it becomes a 'permanent' fault.  An Indy with the Autologic system will also be able to read the transmission errors whether 'present' or 'not currently present'.

And get your battery and alternator tested...
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
