F15 wheel corrosion?

Post by Dr C » Sun Apr 19, 2015 11:22 am

Hello all. I've just noticed some "marks" around the BMW badge at the centre of three out of my four wheels. I know there was a lot of issues with wheel corrosion on the E70 with wheels being replaced, but I don't think I've read or heard about it on the F15? Anyway, I've uploaded a picture (ignore the bubbles; I gave the wheels a quick wash to better see these marks), would appreciate your thoughts folks. My thoughts are either: corrosion, some scrote has tried to prise off the BMW badge, or it's just some sort of gunk (don't want to try to scrape it off and it won't wipe off, so I think this is unlikely).

Cheers
Scott

Looks like corrosion by the photo but to get a better look at it I would remove the wheel and push out the badge from the inside.
Mine look like that with water getting under the lacquer from the badge area.

Fore give my ignorance, but are your alloys polished lacquered alloys . If so all of these, whatever manufacturer suffer from white worm, corrosion.
It's been happening for years, I had a set of alloys that suffered this in the past after a single winter.
Alluminium has a natural reaction to form an oxide when introduced to oxygen, the laquor cracks allowing oxygen to the bare alloy, so it forms a protective oxide.
BMW and any other manufacturer are no different, I had mine powder coated and they were fine.
Fashionable polished rims will continue to cause a headache for both dealer and customer.

According to some, the mandated change to water based lacquers (and paints) is the main reason behind this. Oil/chemical solvent based ones were far more resistant.

I'm beginning to wonder if I will look for a refurbisher who is prepared to use harder lacquers if/when I get mine done on my X6.  Mind you they have lasted better than more recent examples and are not even 5 years old yet!

Thanks all.

Booked into John Clark in Aberdeen on Monday next week for a once-over. The service manager I spoke to seemed to be very au fait with the wheel corrosion issue, and warmed me up to the fact there may be an eight month wait. She said there have been a few F15s with wheel corrosion issues but far fewer than the E70..not surprising I suppose given that the F15 has only been out for 18 months.

Will let you know how I get on...

Cheers

This is so crap, I don't know why BMW can't get this right after so many years

I've not had an issue with Audi or porsche with these type of wheels
Currently :
2012 Audi RS4 (B8)
2012 Porsche Boxster S (981)
2008 Lotus Exige S (a bit modified!)
2015 Nissan Leaf twin turbo with Nitros

Previously :
2008 BMW X5 3.0sd MSport
2005 BMW 535d MSport

Does anyone have any pictures of their own corroded wheels they can send me please? Just so I can compare with what I'm seeing, and also to give to BMW if they start playing funny buggers.

It would be much appreciated... :-[

Hear hear.  If I were BMW I would be all over the wheel manufacturer to get it sorted.  It might also be the choice of alloy being used, but it cannot be beyond them to fix it.  As you say, other major players have no problems.

Hi Scott

If it's a good dealer you won't have any problems, they will have to take photos to support the warranty claim then order the wheels for you that are most probably on back order.

Looking at the photo I wouldn't expect any issue there.

Cheers for that. Yeah they said they need to get the wheels off, take pictures, and get a note of the information that is stamped/embossed on the wheel. The girl I spoke to didn't seem too surprised when I told her about it. She said they've been taking taking up to eight months, but the lead time is shortening now. We'll see...might see if I can upgrade to the black 21" wheels for the same price as they are on the options list  ;)

OK so a quick update. Didn't make the appointment in Aberdeen so just been into Eastern BMW in Edinburgh, four new wheels approved...with a 10 day delivery time!? I was quite surprised at this, given the several months lead time I'd read about on here. Maybe I'll get a call in the next few days saying they messed up and I should get them just about in time for Christmas  :xmassad:!!!

Good result and exactly how it should be.

The wheels seem to have just been released from major back order in the last week or so .

All sounds about right.

Hope it's now sorted quickly for you.

Cheers Stevo. I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it was compared to what I thought. Their service manager came out took a couple of pics and said pretty much straight away that I'd get them all replaced.
